4.0 out of 5 starsA great device with a great price tag!
Reviewed in Australia on 8 August 2019
The all new Kindle 6" 2019 is an awesome little gadget with an even more awesome price tag!

I'm new to the Kindle life. This model is my very first. I bought the device a few weeks ago now, and have been thoroughly enjoying the whole experience.

I was initially drawn to this model due to its affordability. Being a poor, full time University student, I'm unable to afford the higher end models. However, this particular model does everything I want and need it to, all for a great price!

Here are my pros and cons from my experience so far. Cons first:

*I wish the outside casing material didn't have such a smooth, slippery and "papery" feel to it. It would be much easier to hold if the material had a silicone feel for better grip.
I assume that because this model has only been newly released, there aren't many cases/skins available for it yet.

*Unlike the new Paperwhite, this model isn't waterproof.

*Sometimes the operating system tends to be a little slow at times. Which can be a little frustrating.

*The sensitivity of the touch screen could be a bit more sensitive. I guess I'm more used to the touch screen sensitivity of my Samsung Galaxy S9 plus. But sometimes with the Kindle, I have to press a bit harder and longer.

*The way the screen refreshes could be a lot better. This is definitely my main complaint. I know that Kindles only use a very basic and simple operating system. But, I don't like how the text and images turn black for a moment before displaying the content. It makes it feel a bit "cheap", I guess.

And now for the pros.

Some of my favourite features, (most of which are available on all Kindles, I think) are:

*The new built-in front light makes reading your Kindle in any kind of light very easy. It's so much better for our eyes.

*If you don't know the definition of a word in your book, you can simply hold your finger down on that particular word to highlight it, and the Kindle will display a little pop-up box with the definition. This makes it so much easier and faster than having to leave your book and search for the definition elsewhere. You can simply get the definition very quickly, then continue your reading.

*You can turn on a feature that subtly underlines popular sentences, paragraphs, quotes etc that many other people have highlighted when reading the book. I find this pretty cool.

*You can easily write and save any notes you may want to keep anywhere in the book. You can access these notes and highlights in your Kindle library.

*Having access the Goodreads app on the Kindle is also great. You can also sync your Kindle and Goodreads accounts, so everything stays up to date.

*The battery life is amazing! A single charge lasts weeks, not days!

*The reading settings are fantastic and plentiful. You can fully customise the font type, font size and much, much more.

Overall, (especially for the low price), the all new Kindle 6" 2019 is a great little device. It does everything it's supposed to do, does everything I want it to do, and most of all allows me to escape into the magical world of reading anywhere at any time, all on a perfectly sized device that fits in the palm of my hand!

I would definitely recommend this product, especially for those new to Kindle reading.

2.0 out of 5 starsAudio books disabled for Australians
Reviewed in Australia on 16 July 2019
Unfortunately I am disappointed. I purchase a kindle for the first time after reading reviews saying it can play audio books and that is the main thing I need it for. After a frustrating three hours, it seems the audio book function is disabled for Australia. This is not specified anywhere on the Amazon page or elsewhere on the internet. Even the user manual covers how to listen to audio books, except the functions described are just missing.

I was also surprised by the blocky rendering of the font. I think it’s the kind of thing I would get used to over time, so not a deal breaker, but personally I expected better.

The turn page function sometimes bring up unexpected results - I don’t know what it’s doing but it’s not always going to the next page.

The weight is acceptable but I would expect future ones to be even lighter - I get pains in my hands sometimes and lighter is better.

The battery life using the configuration out-of-the-box is not weeks as advertised - I drained it significantly while setting it up and researching. You have to turn off the screen light and the wifi to extend the battery life.

Overall this is a pretty good device, but over priced considering you have to pay Amazon to get the books on it, and considering the Australian market isn’t permitted to use audio books.

1.0 out of 5 stars USER UNFRIENDLY
Reviewed in Australia on 18 April 2019

The most frustrating piece of tech garbage which does not differentiate between new tiles purchased and those titles read. Unlike the older button page turner model (both forward and back) the new unit lumps them all together and when the user has extensive unread books and over 1000 read books) with new and archive lists the new unit is frustrating to say the least and a load of junk to be straight to the point.

The only reason I purchased this new unit is because my old unit had battery failure and I could not find a replacement.

This Kindle is the worst kindle I have ever had and this is about my 6th Kindle.
Just changing a page is a pain, more often it will go backward or change the font size. The bluetooth won't connect.
The battery life is little better than my old kindle with is probably hitting 5 years old sometime this year.
If it wasn't for fact this was a gift I would be returning it.

This Kindle was bought because my original one died after 8 years. This one is very light and more compact than the previous one. It’s easy to get started by following the on screen prompts. It’s touch screen, which I didn’t know and accidentally found out, when I pressed the on button. It operates like a laptop and so is very easy to navigate. I was very happy to see all my previous books automatically moved to my new Kindle. The user guide, like the previous one, is downloaded for your information. A wonderful reading tool. Highly recommended.

I’ve had this for just over a week now and I really, really like it. The LED availability is handy, as well as the ability to turn the LEDs off or choose subtly different light settings. Feels great in one hand or two, and very light and mobile. I found it easy to navigate my large library of Kindle books (including between read and unread, despite another reviewer’s complaint). Well done to the team at Amazon who designed this. This is definitely my ereader of choice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible navigation
Reviewed in Australia on 5 May 2019

Navigation is difficult and frustrating. I just want to search author and title in lists when buying as well as in my library. Doesn't seem to provide the summary that is available on the old kindle. The book covers take up too much space, but the lists option is only available within the library. Also, when I get to the end of a book, I can't seem to close it. How do tell it finished, close, end?

This is a wonderful kindle. I must admit I was very reluctant to buy a new kindle as I have had my old side button one for a long time I think my daughter bought it for me for my 60th birthday that was over a decade ago. anyway I read the reviews and found good ones and not so good, to, I hate it. Well I got it anyway and I love it. For the people who are finding it skips pages , I will give you a hint. BE GENTLE, you only need to touch the screen softly, if you tap, It can be too hard and it will certainly skip a couple of pages. It doesn't take long to get used to it and for the front light alone it's worth persevering. Set your mind to it and you can conquer all problems my old granny used to say. I absolutely recommend this kindle and my new cover that turns my kindle off when I close it.
regards to all keep well Lorraine

This product is slim and compact, easy to set up and works well. One small fault is that it might not accept your password if you do something that I did: don’t know what I did. However I got the device to reset so that it shows the wake up sign when you open it and it appears that in this mode it always accepts the password and opens for reading.

My wife uses my original Kindle and I use the new one. When we buy a book it downloads to both kindles. Both kindles shoe the same set of books in the Library.

Happy with the new product so far.

This new kindle is a bad mistake. The touch screen works sometimes, change font pops up when I don't want it, it is yp navigate because of the touch screen. The old Kindle was secure with the buttons to control things and a pull down menu which took you where you waned to go. Whoever designed this should be sacked.
