4.0 out of 5 starsIf you read the one star reviews don't let them put you off this book
Reviewed in Australia on 21 May 2021
Now, I am a reader of one star reviews before I buy a book so did the same with this one. What I read there nearly put me off so I just wanted to address some of the things that were mentioned in those reviews.
1. If you don't like sex scenes don't read romance novels, this is a story about a woman who hires a male escort so I'm not sure what people were expecting. I know that there are the sweet genre Romance novels out there but I'm pretty sure that you can tell that this is definitely not one of those from the blurb so to criticise it for this is just ridiculous. That being said there was not nearly as much sex in the book as I thought there was going to be, yes there was a bit but it was in line with a lot of romance that I read and I read probably near to 200 books a year.
2. Several people mentioned Fifty Shades of Grey in their reviews which is the thing that actually nearly put me off reading this book. This book is in not related to 50 Shades of Grey in any way shape or form so completely disregard those reviews. If you are like me this is a good thing as in my personal opinion fifty shades is seriously overrated trash. Sorry if that offends anybody.
3. The last thing that more than one reviewer mentioned was about the author not having done her homework about Asperger's. If the reviewers had read about the author they would know that the author has Asperger's and for anyone who does know anything about it knows that it is called a spectrum for a reason. I don't think I need to say anything more about that.
So having gotten my grievances out of the way with the reviews I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it .

Ill be honest when i say this bored me a lot, the plot was basic and kinda cringy at times but this book literally took me so long to finish, it was like a chore not a treat, ill admit the romace was a little cute but overall im a little disappointed because the hype was a lot, but still happy i read it.

Whilst I loved the romance it was kind of cheesy and too easy for them. She kind of fell out of herself too easily for someone with autism

3.0 out of 5 stars a great idea that went off the rails halfway through
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2019

Living with Aspergers has not held Stella back from a very successful career, she loves her high powered job wrangling algorithms for an online retailer, but personal relationships, especially romantic ones are a different story. Deciding that something must be done, and taking a practical approach, she hires a male escort to show her the ropes. But there is a lot more to Michael than first meets the eye and their relationship very quickly deepens into something more meaningful.
Write what you know, they say, and in her note at the end of the book author Helen Hoang reveals that she herself is autistic, so we can be confident that this is a good representation of how one autistic person may act or feel. It is a pretty interesting insight. The romance is sweet and the characters are likeable.
so why didn't I enjoy it?
Michael is perhaps just a little over the top, ridiculously good looking, highly talented and endlessly self-sacrificing. The fact that the plot constantly hinged on people jumping to the wrong conclusions and trying to sabotage there own happiness was gratingly annoying. Some of the plot twists towards the end were really ridiculous - details would be spoilers - but it was just too ridiculously convenient.
In my opinion, this was a great idea that went right of the rails halfway through, but, a lot of people do love this book - there is so much hype out there. I must be missing something.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't enjoy as much as I expected...

Don't get me wrong, if you don't mind this book being in no way, shape or form like a traditional romance/rom com book, then you should enjoy this book and I admire Hoang for thinking outside the box and writing something a bit different. However, I really struggled with the 'couple' that the book surrounds due to their type of relationship (I won't say too much as I don't want to spoil it)! It didn't give me those fluffy, butterfly feelings in my stomach as the couple were so unique within their situation and I didn't gel with that so much. Also, I found the writing style a bit confusing at times and prefer books which take one character's perspective chapter by chapter. But, I do think Hoang discussed the important matter of autism throughout the book and did this very sensitively and thoughtfully. Also, the spicy scenes in this book were HOT HOT HOT! A bit of a mixed one for me, hence the 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great writing, just not my personal choice

This is the first book I read by this author. It is very well written and I’ll admit, the plot hooked me in right away. But I found the intimate scenes quite graphic and a bit of an overkill. Personally, I wasn’t a big fan. I thought it was great that ‘Asperger’ was mentioned in this. It’s not written about enough so it was refreshing to read a book about that and you really felt all of the emotions spilling out of the pages. Only 3 stars because it wasn’t one of my favourites and I found myself skimming some parts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sexy

There's a lot of sexy scenes in this book which isn't a problem as they're well written but it does convey the message that this is intense lust between two beautiful people rather than love. I just couldn't see this relationship going the distance. I also skimmed from Chapter 25 as it just slowed down too much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Makes you think about how we label people
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 August 2018

This is a good book in that it is a positive story about someone autistic without having to be completely quirky and also good for the main character to have full awareness of her condition. It does make you think about the way we tend to label someone with their condition rather than treating them as individuals and knowing that the author is autistic adds weight to the story. The problem for me it was just too much about the sex and this made some of the relationship development not seem entirely convincing. I think it would have been a better story if more of the relationship was outside the bedroom!

This is a very simple romance. Liked the concept but didn't feel like it stood out from other romances. It was a really easy and quick read and just a nice time. Will give her other books and recommend

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but erotica rather than romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 December 2018

I'm a huge fan of Romance books and also as knowing many people being on the spectrum I was looking forward to read this book based on the description and rave reviews. I can appreciate that this book has a very unique promise with the heroine being autistic and the book is actually very well written and enjoyable. BUT let's face it: this is basically an erotic / porn novel where the steamy parts are taking up the vast majority of the narrative. The rest is just puff piece. However enjoyable, this book should be classified as Erotica and God save us not as "Family / Parenting".
I was expecting more actual storyline, more of tackling these sensitive issues.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay - some peaks, a lot of troughs.

At times I really got into this story - but in the end it became very tedious to read and was glad when I reached the end of it.

There are definitely better books out there to read.
