Florence Pugh is excellent!!

Not usually the type of film I would watch but on a whim I decided to give it a go and I'm glad I did. Lady Mcbeth is an incredibly well made period drama. Florence Pugh really shines in this role as the main focal point of the film, you go from feeling sympathy to straight up desliking her character as the film goes on. It really is an incredible and layered performance which made me invested in the film and the actress....surprisingly the film is only 1hr and 30 mins long while it feels slightly longer the pacing is done really well that by the time the story wraps up you're left feeling satisfied with the proceedings.

What this has to do with Leskov?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 May 2018Verified Purchase
I am sorry but this story has nothing to do with Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk Uezd. Absolutely nothing. I am not taking about moving it to Victorian England of course. The story line, it's twists and the ending are completely different. In the book Katherine's lover falls out with her, choosing another woman. So Katherine, being Lady Macbeth of course, kills him and herself... In the movie though "Sebastian" (the name itself sounds ridiculous to a Russian ear) just tells the police who did it... And Katherine denies everything, blaming the maid... And police buys that... How stupid do you think we are?

Watch the Trailer before you buy

I bought this, then watched the trailer, then decided it looked horrific. Not the Shakespearean Macbeth story but instead looks like a harrowing story of a young woman trapped in an abusive marriage. Did not watch.

Not a very special film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2019Verified Purchase
Despite all the rave reviews i didn't find it to have a good story-line. I can see the allusion to Lady Macbeth, but it just wasn't that good a film. The plot was drawn out and was similar to others. The acting wasn't bad but didn't particularly impress.

Superb film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 October 2017Verified Purchase
A quite remarkable film. Saw this in the cinema, and the cold soundscape and superb performances (especially Florence Pugh and Cosmo Jarvis) stayed with me for days afterwards. Watching on the small screen still packs a punch. Sadly, not seen by many when it came out, so please do watch it now it's more widely available!
