5.0 out of 5 stars High quality set of counting blocks with useful learning aids.
Reviewed in the United States on 3 September 2021
My daughter is 4 and a half and we've been working on some basic math together. I found these on my Vine feed and thought they'd be a good teaching tool to help her grasp the basic concepts. I remember using these when I was in school long ago and I always had fun with them.
You get 100 cubes in this package, 10 of 10 different colors. Each block has one "male" side and the remaining 5 are "female". This allows them to connect in many different ways. They also have different cutout shapes on each side (square, triangle, pentagon, etc.). All of that variety means they're very versatile teaching tools. Use one of each color for different numbers to add together. Use one color and "subtract" certain shapes. I've even been able to start with multiplication, using the included flash cards for inspiration. The cubes are all uniform in size and shape and the colors are vivid.. Some other sets I have come across felt thin and flimsy and broke apart when you tried to move them around but this set has thick plastic and the blocks snap together very tight. Sometimes my daughter doesn't line them up perfectly and she has trouble snapping them together, but she tries again and gets it the second time. I'd rather them be a little too tight then a little too loose.
That alone justifies the price but this set includes 15 double-sided, large flash cards with a variety of concepts for the child to solve. The suggested age is "6+" but I have been able to use quite a few of them to illustrate concepts to my 4 year old. It's not a full-course lesson, but it helps introduce her to these new concepts (percentages/fractions, multiplication) in a fun way and it helps ME with basic framework to make learning more approachable. She can now count to 50 easily since we used two colors of blocks, with one representing each number. Adding one block at a time helped her understand more easily than rote memorization. And now she's even picking up basic multiplication by making blocks of the same number and adding them all together. I thought the cards would be more of a gimmick, since trying to cover so many concepts seemed like to wide of a scope for just 30 cards but I feel like that's just a "starting point" to give the parent inspiration and the child something visual to start with.
The most important part is my daughter LOVES playing with these. She has Duplos and old school wooden blocks but she ALSO comes up to me and says she wants to play with her "math blocks." When a child asks you to teach them, you know it's an effective tool.
Totally worth the money for the blocks alone, but the "extras", while not comprehensive, are fantastic starting points to using these tools to teach in a fun way.
