A DELICIOUSLY DARK FABLE? OH! IT SO NEARLY WAS!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 January 2021Verified Purchase
This is a review of the 2012 All Region Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. It plays 2 of the 3 versions of this 1985 dark fantasy film from Ridley Scott. The first is the 94 minute European Theatrical release, the second is the 113 minute Director’s Cut, which is the preferred version, recommended by both Scott and star Tom Cruise. There is a third version, the 89 minute American Theatrical release, disowned particularly by Cruise, which has a totally different (and later) soundtrack, featuring electronic artists ‘Tangerine Dream’. [Note: that appears on the All Region US ‘Ultimate Edition’ from 31 May 2011.]
The Director’s Cut (which we watched) has been restored from an ‘answer print’ of a preview carried out by Scott in California, reaction to which resulted in the additional editing. The ‘answer print’ quality is reportedly less good than the Theatrical version, but we found it excellent. The music on both versions is the original ~ and very fine ~ special soundtrack written by composer Jerry Goldsmith.
Ridley Scott’s body of work encompasses a wide range of genres, and he is as much at home with historical dramas and thrillers as with Sci-fi. From ‘Alien’(1979) to ’Gladiator’(2000) and ‘Hannibal’(2001), his films are renowned for their sweep, their gorgeous detail, their brilliantly-filmed action set pieces, their pace. It is fair to say also however, that this film is probably his most controversial. It received a mauling by critics upon release, and is still periodically giggled over or derided.
Scott set out to create a fairy story or mythological tale. He wanted something original, and sought the involvement of American writer William Hjortsberg. They worked extensively on the script, which initially Scott offered to Disney. Disney concluded it was too dark. It was also clear that location shooting would be prohibitively expensive, so a huge scale model forest, with 60 foot trees, was constructed at Pinewood.
Over the years, the consensus has been that ‘Legend’ LOOKS gorgeous. The sets are stunning, the special effects are amazing, the makeup superbly memorable. This kaleidoscope of colour, artistic sweep and delicious detailing is all pure Ridley Scott. There are also some fabulous action set pieces. The concepts are breath-taking. It also has to be said that though Tom Cruise is not an obvious candidate for forest-dwelling innocent, Jack O’Greene, he makes an excellent fist of the role (and did all his own swimming and diving scenes). Brit Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness has become one of the most iconic characters in cinema. Swiss actor David Bennent is good as the elf Gump and Robert Picardo is fabulous as hideous Meg Mucklebones.
The problem is that the story falls uncomfortably between a deliciously dark fable on the one hand, and an overly-twee kiddies pic on the other. If Scott had held firmly to his bolder, bleaker vision, this could have been truly spectacular. Sadly, he sells out, with whimsical dwarves channelling their inner leprechauns. Bad idea! It remains a visually gorgeous entertainment, but oh! what might have been!

Only bought film for tangerine dream - GONE!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 March 2018Verified Purchase
Film has lost its ambience without the tangerine dream soundtrack and Brian ferry song at the end.
Another example of film meddling to its detriment.
I never watch it now! 😒

some of the reviews on here are for different versions so I am being clear - this review is for
Legend [Blu-ray] [1985] [Region Free] [US Import]
Ultimate Edition
US Import
Format: Blu-ray
I have wanted the version with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack for over 20 years and now I finally have it. Thanks to a few very specific reviews on here I took the plunge and bought this one and was delighted when it turned out to be exactly what I wanted. It also has the Directors cut with the other soundtrack and a few other special features.
It is region free so if, like me, you are wanting that haunting TD soundtrack to whip up the magic - then this is the version you have been looking for.
