- The motion controls are much, much better than the original. I'm a stick and buttons purist, but even I couldn't resist the new motion controls. Flying the loftwing is intoxicating!
- The tutorial is "streamlined" but not hugely different. (That's good for classic Zelda fans)
- For those who never played the original: This game is a proper Zelda game and is completely different from BoTW. The only thing you'll find in common is Link, Zelda, and... well that's about it. Expect dungeons, special items, heart pieces, hidden paths, and to use your head!
- Fii no longer interrupts your game to remind you your batteries are low, among other things.
- Very smooth at 60fps.
- Some muddy, low-res textures look like they came straight from the Wii version.
- Link, Zelda, and the usual suspects look great, but other characters and scenes appear to have just been upsampled and suffer from low polygon counts.
- Dedicated button controls are uninmpressive. Be prepared to hold down the L button whenever you're using the free-pan camera because the right stick is for controlling the sword. I found it difficult to use and quite counterintuitive.
Overall, a great way to revisit the original. But debatable whether it's worth the price of admission. The improved graphics don't really add to the games impressionist charm, and I had no problems returning to the wii version, which played suprisingly well for it's age.
The biggest improvement is undoubtably the enhanced motion controls and streamlined start. The latter however skimps out on Skyward Swords best assets: it's incredibly qurky, colorful, and memorable cast. Something a certain 2017 game lacked in it's entirety.
I'm enjoying it because it's Skyward Sword and a comforting reminder of what a Zelda game should be like. But too little has been done in terms of refining the game and bringing it up to modern standards.
The game itself is incredibly enjoyable - it’s sweet and endearing, quite amusing (and sometimes even laugh out loud funny), and it has a fantastic soundtrack. And it’s a Zelda game - you know what you’re in for with great world building, solid dungeons, and boss battles o’plenty.
I did not bother with the motion controls, opting for the pro controller instead, and while the combat system felt fluid and natural, the camera control system took some getting used to. To move the camera, you must use both hands, left hand holding a trigger button while the right hand uses the stick (unlike the more modern single stick camera controls in games like Breath of the Wild). As the right stick is shared with the sword combat, you will sometimes find yourself accidentally swinging your sword around when you in fact meant to move the camera, which gets a bit tiresome until you get used to it. However, this is a small quibble in what is otherwise a fantastic game and a really enjoyable story experience.

My “first look” at SS was not till Jul2019 when I had some time on my hands to delve into my already dated underused Wii console. Initially, I could not get into the game finding its teenage theme, storyline and gameplay a little tedious; and I didn’t like the wavy struggling visuals. The wii motes felt clumsy and by and large difficult but to be fair I was not a gamer.
Now that this remake has reportedly fixed the annoying blurry visuals of the original wii version and handed us improved controls. I made a fresh start.
This is a laid back cutesy game for teens, fairly linear with plenty of cues what you should do next so you will never be lost. If you’ve played Zelda for a while some things may feel déjà vu.
As I’m not a fan of the joy cons detached - I find them non ergonomic and clumsy to use even for my smallish hands... I had chosen to play SkywardSword Switch with my ProController and it has been a delight - controls worked excellently, camera resets, fighting, exploring, changing weapons or rummaging the adventure pouch has been brilliant. As has flying Loftwing.
As I am not a fan of the switch handheld either I almost never use my joy-cons unless mounted on the joycon holder (never on the handheld) ... but the apro Controller offers smoother quality action.
An easy game with low hanging fruits - minus the frustration factor (oft generated in games like super Mario bros) - easy restarts after game over (Pre mature death) has been helpful.
Dungeons are interesting and enemies not overly difficult to defeat. Generally enjoyable. Cruisy, modular that can be taken at your own time
