5.0 out of 5 starsTop hard sci-fi story.
Reviewed in Australia on 14 February 2019
Just read this book and am really impressed, first time reading anything of James Corey's and am already an avid fan. I am on the wrong side of 75 yrs and have read sci-fi all my life from the pulp fiction mags to all the works of the Grand Masters of the genre and I am delighted that James S A Corey makes the grade and is a delight to read. Am looking forward to reading the rest of this series and later watching the tv series.would highly recommend to any reader of hard sci-fi.

3.0 out of 5 starsEntertaining
Reviewed in Australia on 4 March 2020
I liked the detailed world of the expanse. The story started off well, a missing rich girl somehow linked to an abandonded space craft with an horrific secret on board. Ultimately though it reads like it was written for the screen. And of course it is now a TV series. It was entertaining but not sure i will commit to reading any more in the series...

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, which I found after enjoying the series.

I read this book after watching the 1st series of the expanse which I enjoyed. It is refreshing that the creators of the TV series didn't mess to much with the story, however the book unsurprisingly builds more depth in the characters as we as who is doing what and why. James Corey has created a vibrant and interesting universe with Mars, Earth and the belters, I am looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tv series is great, this is better.

Starts a little slow but quickly picks up speed, for recommendations the book is always better than the movie/tv show. The belters are more alien, there ethics are just as alien. Naomi is a more loyal character then tv and there is a much clearer devide between the fractions(looks, culture, social norms, religion, laws). The tv series is great but this is so much better so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read

I still don't understand what happened to the Canterbury or how Julie Mao got trapped on a plague ship, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters are interesting and believable, and the imagined cultures of these people is imaginative and delightful. It was easy to read too, which is great for someone like me who hasn't read a proper book in a while. The words flow, and there are sentences and descriptions here and there that made me pause and appreciate them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid space adventure with nice plot twists and good reveals

I really enjoyed this book. It's a solid space adventure with some nice plot twists and good reveals. I was worried at the beginning - particularly during the scenes on Ceres - that this was going to be an example of a story that just uses an SF setting but isn't necessarily SF. However things really kicked into full-fledged SF mode once the initial worldbuilding of the political situation of Earth/ Mars/ Belt was rounded out, and it never looked back after that. My only other (early) worry was that the character of Holden was just too damn 'goody-good' to be true. Luckily the other characters are more grounded and cynical and call Holden on his wide-eyed worldview. It's not as cutting-edge science fictionally as, say, Paul Macauley's Quiet War series or Charles Stross's work, but it's certainly got some interesting ideas and goes quite some way to creating a believable solar-system-spanning society that's just a century or so ahead of us. I'm looking forward to reading more and seeing what the mooted TV series makes of it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a Read
Reviewed in Australia on 16 November 2016

Well I went into this having never read any of this series after watching the new Netflix series based on this book.

What can I say, but I loved it. I am a hard core scifi fan from way back, loving Azimov, EE Doc Smith from the golden era through to more recent works in the pulp sci fi fields.

The book has a darker feel to humanity and our endeavours to reach for the stars, but it also shows how even the most flawed of people have redeeming qualities

Worth a read.

I was looking to dive into another world of sci-fi and this does not disappoint. It’s space opera, with a dash of body horror and noir mixed throughout - and it goes down well. An awesome thrill ride beginning to end.

A fast paced saga of stellar proportions with humour, characters you grow to like, honest repartee and perhaps some real physics of space flight.

Great book, engaging and no distractions. I had enjoyed watched the tv series a while back but after reading the book I tried watching it again but didn't like the slow paced tv series. On book two now.

Ripping yarn! Great way to lose sleep and be tired every morning at work for a week!

Fast paced believable vision of humanity with it's many flaws spreading through the solar system. Believable characters delightfully imperfect. Thoroughly entertained.
