The bonds that bind family hide many secrets, some are best left to nurture the group bonded by blood. Others however hide secrets that fester in the dark. When the matriarch is threatened terrible secrets may come out, the person you perceive as the victim may actually be the the person that can bring it all crashing down. Can a family survive this, I still don’t know but I do know I read every word and was so sure I had it all sorted. I didn’t, unputdownable!

Liar, by K L Slater was a well-thought-out and cleverly written story in the psychological/thriller genre about family control and it was absorbing. The plot also depicted lies, revenge, rivalry, ruthlessness and friction. The beginning of the book grabbed my attention immediately and I remained captured until the conclusion. I love a good, challenging puzzler and this book contained twists and misleads that were actually a surprise.
The characters were well-defined and developed. Widower and father of two young sons, Ben Jukes, seemed vulnerable, lonely, weak and later he became confused and torn. Beautiful Amber Carr, his new partner, seemed secretive and manipulative with sociopathic tendencies and her mind appeared set on implanting herself into the family. Judi, Ben's mother, seemed controlling, proud, over protective, consumed, desperate and fearful for her son and grandsons. The two women appeared strong willed, possessive and possibly unbalanced. At times, I was unsure what to think of them. Who was the villian? Who was the real liar? How far would each one be willing go to win the coveted prize of Ben and the boys?
The 'ride' was emotional, complex and disturbing, but intriguing. I can highly recommend this outstanding narrative to readers who love an excellent thriller. This is my second Slater read and she doesn't disappoint.

What a belter of a story!! Never have I felt such unbridled hatred towards a character like Amber...nor sympathy for Nanny Judi. Perhaps because I can be a menopausal nut case myself..haha!
Alongside Judi, I wanted to co-choke Amber myself...smack her annoying husband upside the head and shake reasoning into her son Ben.😄😳
Talk about feeling entrenched in the family dramas!
But the real kicker was the ending! ..it turned everything upside down and left me with, at least partially,misdirected feelings about certain characters.
I often find the clichés " shocking twist" or " killer twist you won't see coming" very hackneyed and overused...but I truly did not see this one coming.
I've enjoyed every one of these books and K.L.Slater is now one of my firm favourites..and I can't wait for the next one.

I do love this author, with her sick and twisted plots. This one was no exception, but I did the sort of figure it out. Hence why I gave it only four stars. And this one a grandmother tries hard to protect her family from an unwelcome intruder. Say no more read it and see. If you like chills and nasty twist this is the book for you.

I've read Safe With Me and Blink and enjoyed them both but thought there were things that let both books down. I still found something really intriguing about this author and her ideas though so I decided to give Liar a go. Delighted to say it's a fabulous read from start to finish and all the issues with her previous books; confusion, unresolved issues and occasional pedestrian writing style are gone. The relationship between a controlling 50 something grandmother and her widower son's new girlfriend is at centre stage, and it becomes apparent that all is not as it seems. Judi's experience with menopause is also highlighted, as are husband's ridiculously old fashioned beliefs. I suppose people like this still exist and whilst you want to be sympathetic with Judi, throughout the story you realise how her controlling behaviour is affecting everyone around her, but at the same time, how prejudices towards people still abound. Really well written, can't wait for the next book!

I like to end my year with the same author that I started it off with. I think it gives a nice roundness to my reading year. So, this year, my favourite Psych Thriller author K.L. Slater got that honour, and I read one of the back catalogue books that I’ve not read yet.
This is one of the author’s earlier books, and it really had some of that magic I remember reading when I first read ‘The Mistake’, (the first book to get me started on the genre). It keeps the suspense going the entire way through the book, and it has the perfect combination of an irrational woman, not knowing who to trust and intrigue.
The book alternates between Judi and Amber’s prospectives (with an odd chapter from Josh, Noah and David). It worked really well having the two main women’s points of views. Without Amber’s, we would have wondered what on earth was wrong with Judi, just as the rest of her family was. However, we were privy to Amber’s Machiavellian ways, so we knew it wasn’t all in Judi’s head. Although, Judi does base all of her fears on not much at all.
Judi’s character seemed a lot older than 55; I kept imagining a 70-year-old from how she was portrayed. I think it was the only menopause angle that kept reminding me of her actual age and that she wasn’t this doddering old lady.
The book was a bit ploddy in places, and I wanted it to get a move on so I could find out why Amber was doing everything and whether it would all come out good.
I had guessed the outcome from the prologue, but I hadn’t seen everything coming. There are many shocks and twists at the end, just what you want from this type of book.
Overall, a perfect tense and exciting Psych Triller. I don’t think I’ve got many more of Slater’s back catalogue to read, which is a shame as her earlier books are much more superior to the recent works.

I can only assume that the writer has no idea how a doctors' surgery functions, and has never seen a 55 year old woman. We do not wear wool slacks and base our lives on cooking a perfect Sunday lunch! That aside, I did not see the twist coming. Which is unusual, and a testament to a really well thought out story. Once this book hit its stride it was immensely gripping, despite every character being deeply unlikable. Apart from Fiona. She deserves a spin-off series.

The Cat's Mother

Felt cheated by the abrupt ending, which is actually also the first chapter!

I hate books that start with the ending, especially when it’s a murder and the synopsis for the book tells us that the two main characters strongly dislike each other. As these two lead characters are narrated with one in the first person and the other in the third, it isn’t too difficult to work out who kills who. So no, I wasn’t ‘shocked by the explosive ending’, although it did have an unexpected twist that was hinted at before the end. Actually, I was more shocked that the book finished abruptly at only 90% on my Kindle – I was expecting another chapter or two giving the aftermath of events but the remaining 10% is taken up with teasers for the author’s other books.

A couple of things niggled me though. Judi is a women in her mid 50s but comes across as a lot older. Maybe it’s just her middle class standing given she lives in a house (described by a character from a less desirable area) which ‘looks just like Downton Abbey’! Interesting that a house this big doesn’t have a downstairs bathroom as Amber repeatedly had to pop upstairs to use the loo!

I have however given the book three stars because it was an easy read with short chapters and it held my interest throughout. I actually enjoyed the bitter rivalry between the two women and the domestic drama which some other readers might class as too much padding. I enjoyed ‘The Marriage’ by this author (in a similar vein, a story about rivalry between mother and daughter in law) and will definitely try other books by this author.

Raw emotion

I have to admit this was a very difficult novel to put down and was forced to read it in two sittings. First of all may I praise the writer on yet another intriguing novel full of fascinating characters. Judi the obsessive, intrusive m-in-law who has so many issues. When her widowed son Ben wants to marry the scheming Amber & be a mother to his two young sons the friction between the two women is palpable. Judi can't cope with the vision of losing her son and grandsons to this woman and hunts for reasons to tarnish her. Both women are festering unhealthy dislike. There's a superb bubbling underflow of the manifestations of early menopause which probably was heavily responsible for what actually happened. Underneath all that there are deep, shocking secrets and guilt that has grown like a cancer. Her dead son's shrine was somewhat unhealthy but what can it possibly be like to lose a 14 year old son??? Who knows how you might actually react. Judi presently feels usurped and suffers the empty nest syndrome of her son and grandchildren as well as raw jealousy, feeling left out and unwanted and the poor support, lack of understanding and infidelity from her husband. She done everything to control their lives for years and suddenly she's no longer needed. I felt she should have banged herself on HRT and got a cat or dog for some unconditional love which she badly needed. I didn't take to Amber. I could see her predicament but her early stalking, manipulation, lies and the appalling tricks played on those she disliked made her go down in my estimation. Ben seemed a bit dumb and too easily enraptured but he had a good heart. It was perceptively written and covered so much interesting ground on the interactions between people.
