Product description
Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the authors alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwigs take, the beloved story of the March sisters four young women each determined to live life on their own terms is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothe Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Classic from around the Victorian era. The true story of the inter-twined loves and heartaches and financial struggles of an American (war years) middle class family with sisters: Jo, the feminist boyish author (main character) who marries an unlikely soothing but firmly dignified hot-as professor; Amy, the society beauty who stands up to Jo's ex-boyfriend, and makes him love her for what she is, and give up drinking, because Jo and he failed as lovers; Beth, who dies of the common diseases of the era; and Meg, who marries a simple school teacher, and has a struggle to give up vanity, for her family joys. It is mostly happy ever after ... AND ALL TRUE ... the books are even more revealing ... about people they helped, and true live things ... and I'm a swinger, baby! LOL.

Little women is a wonderful warm movie that can be watched by all the members of the family. It has romance, pathos, fun, in other words it's an all round beautiful movie. More importantly ...what a great cast, Laura Dern, James Norton, Meryl streep and that only about half of the cast.
Do yourself a favour & watch this fabulous movie.... Little Woman!

This is a superb piece of cinema. Looks, great, sounds great, performances are first class, remarkable screenplay, casting 100% on point: the film is all these things, and yet the whole is still better than the sum of the parts. For me, this 2019 version of "Little Women" is a must-see.

Expectations were low, but the film still failed to meet them. Long, dull and erratic jumps back in time. When my wife wasn't watching I skipped 30mins and there was no noticeable disruption to the story. Maybe fans of previous movies of this title will enjoy it...

Having read the book, as a young teen, watched the version with Susan Sarandon, this is the loveliest movie I’ve seen.
The costumes are beautiful, the sets are amazing, the actors are perfectly cast. It’s a tear-jerker for sure, but also funny.
No swearing, no sex scenes, beautiful movie for the whole family.

There are so many versions of this out there. I expected a little more than this one delivers. It just doesn't work for me.

As other reviewers have said good quality movie. An America that no longer exists. Emotionally resonant without being smarltsy. Bit of an idealisticending that does not mirror life. MEH

Superb film....slight timeline disconnect but it also makes the film unique from other versions!

I truly loved this version of the story. Casting couldn't have been better...although I was surprised at the end to see "Saul Goodman" as the father...lol.
It's a beautiful film, superb acting. Yes, the back and forth in the plot was slightly confusing but for a fan...you can tell the subtle nuances that differentiated the timeline and you got a bit used to it. Definitely was a bold choice and I do think they could have done a better job aging the cast so that the timeline could have been more distinct. However....how many versions of Little Women can be done the exact same linear way? It makes me kind of respect that at least the writer and director were trying to change it up a bit. Im fine with that personally. Not everything has to come from the "purist" perspective of the book. Highly enjoyable film in my humble opinion...and I'm not one to buy movies. But this I added to my collection.

Finally a Little Women movie that holds up to the charm of the books
Reviewed in the United States on 9 August 2020Verified Purchase
I love this movie! I saw it 4 times in the theater. The first time I was with my mom and a theater of women young and old who all probably grew up reading the beloved novel, and 30 minutes into the movie I was already beaming and tearing up because I was just thinking, "FINALLY! They're really doing it! They're making the charm of the book come to life!" By the end of the movie, the theater was in tears of both sadness and joy, and we all left with our hearts warmed.
I've seen just about every Little Women adaptation of the last 30 years, and to me none of them have done true justice to the playfulness, the familial love, the deep friendships, the girls' worries, the girls' joys, the romantic love stories of this book. This movie did it in such a fresh way. I was so so pleased! READ THE BOOK FIRST and fall in love with it, then see the characters come to life.
Sidenote: I could harp on a few things that weren't accurate from the book to screen like the age and nationality of Professor Bhaer, or the age of Amy for that matter. But these things are easy to let slide when the true CHARM and WHIMSY of the story and the NATURE of the characters is captured so well. The movie is nearly perfect.

WELL DONE
Reviewed in the United States on 19 April 2020Verified Purchase
A MUST HAVE. When I was almost a teenager I lived in a small mountain village. A bus came through , out and back 6 days a week. The library was at the end of the route. I discovered '"LITTLE WOMEN" and Louisa May Alcott. Well it was difficult to carry all those 10 or more books home but to miss the bus meant a very long walk home. When I saw that a film had been on a DVD,,I ordered it, it arrived and my dear partner had a nose that would turn up at the thought I would spend what he felt was "another" female story. This nasty virus had kept us together for a long time. So with my hopes on high I waited for the time. He arrived from the garden. Would you believe he never left that story and continue to exclaim his unexpected delight at both the author, depiction of a time I had attempted to describe without overdoing my delight with the clever way this story had been more than a story. As I write I recall his attention to what he had discovered was a brilliant and so well described vision that more than met my tales of living at my adolescent age that rang true. His admiration for Alcott, 5 young females living together and all was exactly as I had raved about for so long. Now he is waiting for more Alcott and if luck prevails perhaps we will learn how the females made good lives for themselves. Now the archived beaded dresses up in the attic began to be worn, from a man who wanted to feel the experience ." UNBELIEVABLE" continues to be exclaimed as he thrives on truth. Yes all was true that I had stated. Thank you to all who put a lot of heart into creating this movie. This was well done. I think we shall always have ALCOTT days, with a touch of feather beds, henna hair, dreams of future accdomplisments and wait to learn there is more to come. It had to have taken quite a bit of hard work to bring those days and hopefeully the crew that read, many times, please thank them for bringing unexpected happiness at a time when all are waiting for better healty days.

Not The Little Women I was expecting
Reviewed in the United States on 25 January 2021Verified Purchase
I wish I had read the lower rated reviews of this movie rewrite before I purchased it. I know this movie and love it. I looked forward to seeing this but what a disappointment! If like me you love Little Women, don't waste your time or money on this. This movie is not written to play out as an unfolding story of the lives of four sisters as they grow into women. This movie is written as a novel in the process of being written with the chapters all mixed up. At times you wonder if the pages were tossed in the air, and the movie played out as they landed. Flash forward. To where? Flash back. From what? While all of these actors may be good in their own right, they just didn't work in this movie. Much of the time the lines seemed flip with modern phrases slipped in. There wasn't any emotion or conviction in the delivery of lines. It was just kind of matter of fact. Watching this was more like watching a bad rehearsal than a finished movie. The mom didn't come off as a strong mother figure, but rather more like another sister. The youngest sister looked older than the oldest sister. Laurie looked like he was about 13, not old enough to date, let alone marry. It just isn't good. It was such a disappointment. I almost turned it off, but I tend to finish what I start so I stuck with it. Now I'm going to go back and watch the older versions of this movie to cleanse me of my disappointment.

Jo Is Fine, Everything Else Is A Travesty
Reviewed in the United States on 23 November 2020Verified Purchase
You may read articles from critics and Gerwig fans telling you this is the best film adaptation of Little Women.
Don’t believe them.
The approach taken to tell this story is baffling and disjointed. Gerwig jumps around the chronology in a manner that some may find artful but which fans of this story will find unnecessary.
This Jo (Saoirse Ronan) deviates from the character a bit but she captures the spirit of Jo very well. The problem is that not one other casting choice is anywhere near as inspired. Laurie comes off as whiny and weak, Meg might as well be non-existent for all the personality she displays and Amy is almost robotic in the early scenes. Marmee is a pale echo of what she ought to be, and as much as I love Bob Odenkirk in other things, his Mr March is just...strange. You'd think Meryl Streep would create a likable Aunt March...but no.
There are liberties taken with both plot and script. If this had been a better made movie these would not stand out like glaring defects...but they do. Marmee saying she's ashamed of her country? Jo telling Meg she'll be bored with John in two years? John being concerned Meg is going to the Moffats? None of it works, but since almost nothing else in this movie does, I suppose it hardly matters.
Believe it or not, Little Women is actually a feminist tale on its own, without anyone inserting their own agenda. Jo possesses many traits that are not considered typically feminine. All of the girls are close to each other and love and encourage one another. Yes, every sister who hasn't passed away by the end of the novel ends up married, but each relationship is totally different and shows that a woman making her own choice is the most important thing.
All the production values in the world can't make this a good movie. Never mind what the critics say...if you really loved the book, this movie is going to leave you cold.
