So, so good! I was concerned watching it in 4k that maybe it might look dated... Not at all. There is nothing better to play on a big screen than this.

A classic and well worth watching more than once. We binged The Hobbit and LOTR series over the rainy Christmas season.

An epic masterpiece and a timeless classic

A modern classic.
Still looks amazing even though it is a long time since this movie was first released.
Makes Game of Thrones look like an episode of Emmerdale.
A masterpiece.

definitely the best DVD option for this film

i won't review the films becasue if you are thinking of buying this box set then you obviously liked them ( or whoever you are thinking of buyinh for did ). as for this box set, i loved the original theatrical releases but the the extended versions are so much better with all of the extended / additional scenes being finished to cinema quality and seamlessly slotted in, i truly wish more films were released this way ( a prime candidate being the Star Wars prequels or the original Alien ). i know a lot of people have moaned about the fact that the film itself is split between 2 disks but come on people how hard is it to get up and change a disk, you'll probably need a quick pit stop by then anyway! and for the sake of maintaining the sound quality, well worth it. as for the extras, i usually only watch the alternate/deleted/extended scenes ( which are already part of the film in this package ) but there are so many in this box set that there is almost certainly something here for everyone and certainly far more than was available on the original theatrical DVD releases and the menu tree in the enclosed booklet is a greeat help and beautifully done.

Just amazing

I purchased all of the limited edition box sets of the extended version of these films on dvd when they 1st came out, and rather than ruin them by keep getting them out of the box thought i would grab them on bluray instead.
The films for me just never age, they are, as a trilogy, my favourite films of all time. The bluray is spectacular and i feel as though i am watching the films for the 1st time.
Great to chill out on a sunday with.

Great movie, great extras, good transfer.

The Movie:
The movie itself is arguably the best in the trilogy, though it shouldn't necessarily be taken as its own movie. The extended cut of this movie is as great as the one for the first two - it not only expands the running time - it also expands on the story and gives fans a chance to see things that didn't make it from book to cinema screen. The movie is split on two discs; this gives the viewer a logical break in the
The Video:
For a DVD, the picture is adequate. That said, as a cinephile, it does always bother me, when a DVD transfer has black bars all the way around the movie - I mean, of course there should be black bars top and bottom to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio. But those 6-10 on either side of the image are so ugly, when your monitor doesn't apply overscan. This arguably won't bother most casual viewers anyway, and the rest of the 2.39:1 picture looks excellent for a DVD, with the slightly desaturated colours of the original theatrical presentation nicely presented. Like previous releases, the integration of the new scenes is seemless.
The Audio:
The DTS 6.1 ES Surround track is excellent - simply the best DVD has to offer. It is sad, that the push towards Blu-Ray keeps these tracks from being added to DVD - of course Blu-Ray will always sound better, but especially so, if only compared to a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo tracks are also provided.
The Extras:
The last two parts of the "Appendices" are here. Once again an excellent, attractive package is rounded out by a huge amount of exclusive extras. Overall this set is definitely worth the upgrade.

The best of the extended editions from the original trilogy - I don't know how they left some of these scenes out from the cut shown at cinemas - the opening sequence with the death of a certain evil wizard, Gandalf facing down the witch king....some really nice scenes that are worth seeing. Purchased as a gift for someone too young to enjoy it properly when they were first released. I have the extended versions mself and they're absolutely brilliant. The extended scenes are worth the extra run time to an already long film and they make a great film even better. Far superior to the newer Hobbit films in my opinion and the extras I think are better also.
