The Legend Comes to Life
With the extended edition of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, Warner Bros. presents one of the greatest achievements and most ambitious undertakings in film history, all in one incomparable boxed set. Filled with lush New Zealand landscapes, extraordinary special effects and a star-studded cast, the Lord of the Rings trilogy brings to the big screen the classic fantasy tale of Middle-earth and its myriad residents as lovingly told by author J.R.R. Tolkien.
Trivia
As of 2015, the Lord of the Rings trilogy has earned nearly $2.8 billion worldwide.
With a budget of over $280 million, the entire project took about eight years to complete.
The franchise garnered a record-breaking 30 Academy Award nominations and 17 wins, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Art Direction.
The final film in the trilogy, “The Return of the King,” is the only fantasy film ever to win an Oscar for Best Picture.
Viggo Mortensen performed his own stunts and insisted on using a real steel sword instead of a lighter aluminum replica.
Christopher Lee was the only member of the cast and crew ever to have met J.R.R. Tolkien.

However, after recently purchsing this, I truly think this isn't as bad as it has been projected. I will not go into the details of how many discs and what are they, but simply want to say that it is indeed a very good collector's set if anybody is interested. I own both the theatrical and extended sets in DVD and having seen all the three, I can surely tell that this blu ray transfer is truly excellent. Having watched this trilogy several times, I have almost recited every scene along with the music and I can personally say that they have done a great job making this (exactly the way they did in making the Extended Editions- Superior DTS ES 6.1 sound, overwhelming extra features and above all, the movies themselves). Although it is debatable whether both Theatrical and Extended editions could have been fitted on one blu ray, I personally feel that must not have been possible (because even in the extended edition blu rays, the movie is split in two discs! why it would be so if blu ray is so spacious? I guess the answer lies in the humongous data these movies have; HD picture, Loseless sound and above all, their larger-than-life length).
Anyway, the bottomline is, this has given the buyer a choice..whether to go for the regular or extended. It's good in one way as we will not be forced to buy the extended (or vice versa) even when we need just one edition. Now with the slashed price (as low as 33 bucks!), this is a nice buy for your collection.
