2.0 out of 5 starsThe Maidens fails to fulfill early promise
Reviewed in Australia on 5 July 2021
The premise of The Maidens was excellent. Beautiful young ladies murdered in a manner inspired by Ancient Greek ritual, in the picturesque setting of Oxford University, the crime investigated by a bereft widow who mourns her husband who also died mysteriously while on holiday in Greece. Alas, the story is peppered with purple prose and the plot drifts this way and that if indeed it ever existed. Who is the murderer? We are offered a choice of three suspects but after two chapters the reader no longer cares. The characters are cardboard and it is impossible to bond with any of them. The writing is abysmal. How this book won what is purported to be a major award and became a best seller is the only mystery that gives one anything to puzzle over and is the only thing that intrigued me. The author has also written another book, which I will avoid like the plague. I regret having purchased The Maidens. I must have had one glass of red wine too many when I did so.

I really liked this book. The reason I didn't give 5 stats was I did think it was a bit slow in parts but the overall story I thought was interesting and well written

4.0 out of 5 stars A twisty murder investigation set among Cambridge University’s elite

After loving The Silent Patient, I was excited to read Alex’s second book. I didn’t know what to expect and it was certainly unexpected. Set in beautiful Cambridge, The Maidens draws on Greek tragedies that I was unfamiliar with, although that didn’t detract from the story as they were all well explained. 36 year old Mariana is a brilliant group therapist, still reeling from the unexpected death of her husband Sebastian in a climbing accident. She travels to Cambridge with her niece Zoe who has asked for her assistance following the disappearance of her friend, Tara. Shortly after they arrive, Tara’s body is found. It is clearly the result of murder. Zoe believes her Greek History Professor, Edward Fosca, is responsible for her death.

There is a group of female under graduates called The Maidens. They are guided by and totally supportive of their Professor. It is unsurprising that they gave him an alibi for the time of Tara’s murder. Having studied at the University, Mariana is soon trying desperately to find out what happened to Tara and who is responsible for her murder. The Police advise her to leave the investigation to them and tell her to back off. Not used to being told what to do, Mariana ignores their warning. She places herself at risk of harm.

Her investigation allows us to see into Cambridge’s secrets and there is a lot of tension as we accompany Mariana as she delves deeper into the tragedy. More bodies ramp up the suspense and it is not until the very end that we find out the big reveal. I did not think the reveal or the twist was as good as the Silent Patient, however, I was shocked as events unfolded. If this is the style of his books in the future, I am already looking forward to Mr Michaelides’s next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars To my surprise.. enjoyed it!

I read a lot of negative reviews about 'The Maidens' and as a result, I delayed reading it. What a shame because I really enjoyed it! Yes some bits were a bit odd, and I don't think the Greek mythology worked too well, but there were elements of this in The Patient aswel, and I felt the same. I liked the characters and loved the short chapters that kept me reading and engaged. The twist at the end was good, and it caught me by surprise! Overall a good read, without having too high expectations! As far as thrillers / murder mysteries go.. I think this is pretty good

I’ve had this one on my tbr pile for a few months and I’m glad I finally read it as it’s a great read.
Mariana is called by her niece who is devastated as a girl’s body has been found, and her best friend is missing.
After arriving in Cambridge and speaking to Zoe, Mariana is convinced a lecturer called Edward Fosca is the killer.
He has a group of students who are called The Maidens and each death is linked to Greek tragedy, which he teaches.
I had my suspicions as to who the killer was but was totally surprised when their identity was revealed.
A great read with a few twists and turns.

I did enjoy this, despite the not so good reviews. It was easy to get into the story. Very well written. I felt I was there in Cambridge. I liked the fact that Theo from the silent patient appears in this towards the end. I will say don't compare this to the authors first book they are totally different But this hasn't got the wow factor which the silent patient has. The ending was a tad disappointing. Overall a good thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars . Good Book

This book is brilliant, great story and plot twist. A very good read, i read it in a few days.
However, given it 4 stars, i finished feeling like there was more story to tell. The ending seemed rushed and left the story with unanswered questions. I think it could of been 3 or 4 chapters longer, just to tie up lose ends. But still read it, is a very good story

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but it's no silent patient!

Really enjoyed this and had high expectations after reading silent patient. It was always going to be hard to top that book but I still loved this. Alex has an amazing way of building the characters and setting the scene. I was hooked wanting to find out the ending. Highly recommend (only reason it isn't 5* is because I'm comparing to silent patient!)

Very enjoyable book, last quarter felt ever so slightly drawn out. That said, a real image turner. Have not read his first book, but plan on doing so now
