Bernadette Banner is a filmmaker and dress historian, best known for her YouTube channel documenting the exploration, reconstruction and interpretation of English dress predating the widespread use of the electric sewing machine, with a particular focus on the years between 1890 - 1914. Her reconstruction work seeks to put period authentic techniques and machinery into practice while simultaneously seeking to learn how historical sewing techniques and attitudes towards dress can be adopted today in an effort to fight the effects of 21st century fast fashion.

Banner graduated from New York University in 2017 following an earlier career in costume design for Broadway in New York. She has since worked with the School of Historical Dress in London, including publication projects such as Janet Arnold's "Patterns of Fashion 5: The Content, Cut, Construction, & Context of Bodies, Stays, Hoops, & Rumps, c. 1595-1795". She currently works as a content creator and research consultant in London.

Brilliant book for a beginner

Ive recently gotten curious about making some of my own clothes and i gotta say this book is perfect for someone like me who doesnt know much except for watching some you tube videos.

The pictures are actually helpful, the instructions are simple but detailed enough to help me figure out the few things i was looking for. This is a wonderful book that i have a feeling will get lots of use as i slowly build my confidence and work my way through each bit.

It is NOT a “how to make THIS shirt” but a guidebook on different seams, stitches, pockets, button holes, darning and so froth that i actually feel is more helpful. It teaches you A skill and then you can apply it to your projects as needed.

So far im very impressed and i cant wait to work my way through all the bits she has in here!! :) i dont regret spending any money on this. I think it will prove itself well worth the investment as i go.

An in-depth knowledgable book with no politics (only unless you make it political)

You might have seen reviews complaining about the "transgender agenda" in this book, but there is no agenda. There are no politics in this book. The only ones politicizing sexuality and gender are the ones who think being LGBTQ is an "agenda". It is not. If you are bothered by pronouns then I suggest you log off for a while and touch some grass. Bernadette has always been outspoken about her support for the LGBTQIA community (she herself is asexual, while her sibling is non-binary), so I'm not sure how you could go so long and be genuinely surprised she supports queer people. It is very sad how something as simple as pronouns can make one turn down a fountain of knowledge so clearly and concisely written as it has been done in this book (everyone has pronouns, including you, person who might possibly think queer people's very existence is an agenda.) I've been interested in sewing for years, but I have yet to read and learn about sewing in such a short amount of time as I have reading this book. Bernadette worked hard on this book, and it shows, almost every description has an image attached to it, I understand concepts I didn't understand before after one read, and I actually feel confident in knowing what I'm talking about when it comes to topics such as fiber contents or how something as simple as pinning can affect the fabric's behavior. So from inside the historical costuming community and out, those pesky queers will never go away, no matter how much you try to politicize our existence and create laws to stamp us out. We will always be here, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary, forever and ever gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay we will ALWAYS say gay HAPPY PRIDE MONTH Y'ALL

Ive followed Bernadette for years on IG and youtube. Im also a quite experienced sewist, with both hand and machine techniques so i bought the book, not so much to learn, as to perfect my skills and to get more Bernadetteness in my textiles. Im not sure if the Kindle edition compares to the physical book as, for example, the index doesnt have the ‘where to find’ pages listed, but that does not detract from the 5+++ stars i could give if possible. Btw the pictures are incredibly beautiful and the essays by prominent sewists are really wonderful!!

Background: My first experiences with sewing were being taught to darn socks (by hand, of course) and making a simple apron on a treadle machine 70 years ago in the orphanage! These two memories came rushing back to me as I scanned all the pages for the first time after my long anticipated copy of Bernadette’s book arrived yesterday. I was surprised to realize how much I’d learned in the past and had since forgotten. Now I’m so looking forward to savoring each and every page, partly to refresh my recollection, partly to learn new techniques. I love everything about this book: the photos, the crystal clear writing instructions, the cameo stories written by her friends…..and above all…Bernadette’s palpable presence on every page. Somehow it’s even better than watching her YT videos, perhaps because instead of sharing her with thousands of other viewers, it’s just the two of us.

Beautiful book on the art of sewing

I have been following Bernadette on You Tube for quite a while, I think from the beginning. She was carving a turnip with a spoon while talking about sewing and the history of Halloween. She worked so deliberately as she chatted, that it reminded me of the many times when I would sit and talk with others while my hands were busy with some project.

This is a beautiful book. The illustrations are gorgeous and the instructions clear. It covers the basics of home sewing but includes details about hand sewing techniques that are not as commonly available. It also, for example, has information on how to determine what fibers are in your fabric, but also why that matters.

I think this book will appeal to the many people who have followed her videos and now have a book where those techniques are documented. It should also appeal to people who are thoughtful sewers. Who are interested in why things work the way they do and some of the history behind them.

As I write this, just got my pre-ordered copy, there are a lot of reviews in Spanish and Portuguese for some other product, which does not seem to even be a book.
