Product description
Prague, 1942. The Third Reich is at its zenith, controlling most of Europe. Reinhard Heydrich (Jason Clarke, Zero Dark Thirty), aided by his wife Lina (Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl), has risen to the top of the Nazi Party as head of the SS, the Gestapo, and the architect of the "Final Solution". His brutal and oppressive rule of occupied Czechoslovakia leads to Hitler dubbing him "the man with the iron heart".However, a small group of Czech Resistance fighters led by Jan Kubi (Jack O'Connell, Starred Up) and Jozef Gabk, (Jack Reynor, Free Fire), seek to stop the unstoppable and plan to assassinate Heydrich, making him the highest-ranking Nazi officer ever to be killed during World War II. Based on Laurent Binet's bestselling book HHhH, The Man With The Iron Heart and its all-star cast tell the incredible true story of how the brave men and women of the Resistance sacrificed everything in the name of freedom.

It probably helps to know a bit about the man. The film starts with Heydrich being cashiered from the German Navy in 1927 for conduct unbecoming a German officer.
Subsequently an embittered, yet highly ambitious man, Heydrich managed to convince Heinrich Himmler to give him his first job in the fledgling SS as a Counterintelligence Officer. From there he progressed organising street violence against the Communists and a key role in Night of the Long Knives; where the SS eventually supplanted the SA as Nazi Germany’s prime instrument of terror.
When Germany invaded Czechoslovakia and Poland, Heydrich used his counterintelligence knowledge to blackmail top German Generals, into letting his Einsatzgruppen taskforce “Clean Up” the newly conquered territories of anyone considered "Racially Impure".
It quickly became established that Heydrich, unlike Himmler who blenched at SS violence, was willing to get personally involved in any killing.
On orders from Goering, Heydrich chaired the Wannsee Conference in January 1942 where the Final Solution was finalised. Heydrich was by now at the height of his powers.
About two thirds in the film switches to the Operation Anthropoid plot to assassinate Heydrich using Czech agents dropped in from Britain. The film runs parallel to the earlier version Operation Daybreak but without the problems of poor recording quality.
I’m not entirely convinced by Jason Clarke as Heydrich; he is a bit too well built and full in the face. The real Heydrich was a lot slimmer and thinner in the face.
If you look at a photograph of the real Heydrich it does not take a lot of imagination to realise that this was a thoroughly evil man.
