3.0 out of 5 stars Warm and enjoyable sound, needs replacement pads for the best experience

The Porta Pros are a legendary pair of headphones which have received plenty of praise within the audiophile world. Being an avid lurker in such forums, I saw the hype and had to experience it myself. To get straight to the point, I think these headphones are overrated regarding what people claim to be "the best sound ever". However I only felt turned off by these when I used them with stock pads but trust me when I say, replacement pads such as Yaxi Pads (seen in the picture) open up a whole new world of sound for the Porta Pros. Now I'll get into the specific details as well as summarize the difference replacement pads make at the end.

The Sound:
With stock earpads Porta Pros have a huge amount of bass, so much so that it bleeds into the mids and the highs (vocals, strings, etc.) and effectively muffles the sound frequencies. A plus side to this is that due to the veiled sound of the higher frequencies, vocals sound farther away and creates a wider soundstage. The bass-bleed is what people call "muddy bass" as you've probably seen on other reviews of the Porta Pros. As a result of the bass and not-so detailed treble, the Porta Pros have a warm sound signature. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because on certain genres of music such as Hip-Hop or Trap, the sound signature complements their beats and make the rapper's vocals sound really cool (Makes old school sound old school and new trap stuff sound "harder"). It also works very well with shoegaze and rock music that would otherwise be harsh sounding with headphones that have detailed treble.

Comfort:
The comfort of these with stock earpads are terrible. The headband's clamp force is strong enough that my ears would start hurting after half an hour of listening to music and I'd have to take regular breaks. Adjusting the headband to my big head would help a little, but then the seal wouldn't be as good so it's not a viable compromise. That's really all I have to say about these, the comfort is bad.

Design:
I love the design of the Porta Pros. It's retro aesthetic is so attractive to me and I've gotten complements within a week of wearing them. This is probably the reason I use the Porta Pros so often, it looks so cool to me that wearing them makes me feel cooler. The build quality is not that good however. You can tell the plastic is cheap and the metal headband is a miss. The plastic is durable enough that even after sleeping with the headphones under me multiple times, it's withstood everything. With that being said, feeling the material leaves much to be desired. The headband kind of sucks. You have to be careful with adjusting/removing the headband from your head because if you're not, say goodbye to one or two hairs on your head. The ComfortZone pressure adjustment feature is useless because the setting immediately goes back to "firm" after adjusting to the pressure you want.

With replacement pads: (Yaxi Pads)
This is what makes these headphones shine. It's what makes these headphones competitive with the more expensive products. The Yaxi Pads truly saves the Porta Pros and makes the Porta Pro experience exponentially better. I don't want to get too in detail with it but to summarize:

Yaxi Pads open up the higher end frequencies of the Porta Pros, so that voices, strings and such are clear and detailed. This is awesome because on top of this, you still have the warm sound signature of the Porta Pros (big bass, distanced vocals). The bass gets better as well and becomes more punchy and clean.
The Yaxi Pads are seriously pillows for the ears and make the Porta Pros actually comfortable to wear.
Finally, as you can see in the picture, the pads adds a lot to the design and with different colors, adds the bonus for self-expression.
