Convincing and sympathetic portrayal of a flawed individual
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2018Verified Purchase
The Mercy is based on the true story of Donald Crowhurst who was obsessed with becoming the first man to sail single handed around the world. I followed newspaper reports of his progress at the time, little knowing along with the rest of the world that a greater drama was being played out. The film explores this complex man and Colin Firth's performance is sympathetic. He was always chasing a dream, was utterly selfish and left his family and debts to take part in a 'race' to be first. His deluded self belief was what drove him to extraordinary lengths and if you don't know the ending, watch the film...
This is a film which really gets to the heart of the people involved. It has credibility and substance and I really enjoyed it. A Race Too Far and a book about Crowhurst's journey are excellent reads which flesh out the detail. The DVD has loads of worthwhile extras including a behind scenes featurettes and very interesting Donald featurette.

Good Job Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz

I cannot remember the actual incident but this film is full of emotion and family loyalty. It also shows inner demons and how people deal with them. As usual Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz are excellent but so are Ken Stott and David Thewlis. It is not an easy watch but persevere as the photography and the screenwriting are very good. I am not sure how well it did in the cinema but am glad I have it for my collection.

I first heard about Donald from a tale about sea mystery s. I believe that Donald was a very very brave man, who went a journey and was totally out of his depth, torn between taking a journey in a boat that was unsuitable for the voyage. And being in debt to his backers who would take everything if he didn't go, it was clear from what I have read that he didn't want to go but pride and not wanting to let people down carried him on, its a tragic tale the press and his backers should have held their heads in shame, Colin firth as usual is brilliant, you needed the flashbacks to really fill in the gaps in the build up to him going and should have put more in to the film,
There is a documentary on you tube that gives more detail. Where he sailed from Teignmouth and had to be brought back should have been included because it would have shown that he was totally unsuitable for the voyage a very good film
And sad one

Disappointing

I was waiting for THE MERCY to turn up at a local cinema but it seemed that none appeared to be showing it. Having now watched the DVD I can see why. I know the Crowhurst story very well and this film does not portray it. For a better insight read the book The Strange Voyage of Donald Crowhurst by Nick Tomalin and Ron Hall.
