5.0 out of 5 stars A 80's Classic remastered beautifully on BLU-RAY
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2020
this beloved 1980's stylized Cop drama, finally got a blu ray release and i'm not disappointed. i haven't watched Miami Vice in years but i will always remember how much of impact this show really was at the time and very influential on pop-culture. very stylish and flashy, the exotic locations, neon lights, fast cars, the boats, the suits, and of course the music, unlike other shows "Miami Vice" is unique because of it's use of music from that era (mostly popular pop and rock songs) and Jan Hammer's amazing musical score as tools for telling a story which gives it an almost music-video vibe to it. the premise of Miami Vice is about two cops Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and Rico Tubbs (Phillip Micheal Thomas) working undercover for MDPD "Vice Squad" in Miami, Florida, mostly drug-related crimes. this show has fantastic production values, almost theatrical-like cinematography and fantastic cast members: Johnson and Thomas work so well together, probably the best and coolest TV buddy-cop characters of all time and not to mention the Police Lieutenant Marty Castillo played brilliantly by Edward James Olmos. the show is also known for many talented celebrity guest appearances which most become bigger stars in Hollywood ("Bruce Willis", "Liam Neeson", "Julia Roberts" etc.) and also famous musicians ("Gene Simmons", "Phil Collins", "Leonard Cohen" etc.). the show saw some mild changes around season 3, it got darker and more serious but still enjoyable.

about the Blu Ray set:
the picture and sound quality is miles better then the original dvd releases, it's not perfect there are some mild picture grain here and there, but its so minor you won't even noticed it, the picture's aspect ratio is in old-school 4:3 (with the black bars on the left and right of the screen) not 16:9 widescreen (as many were hoping), but since that's how it was originally filmed and aired i don't mind. all the original music is thankfully intact and all the episodes with the exception of season 5 are in their chronological order. the blu ray set also contains several bonus features originally from the north-american season 1 DVD for the first time in Region 2/B territory, and the box-set itself is packaged very nicely. however i was disappointed there was no subtitles option at all, this blu ray set is also unfortunately "region locked", it will only work on Region B supported Blu ray players or multi-region systems, and not to mention how expensive this complete set is, it took me a while to find this complete set at a reasonable price, overall i'm very happy with this set and it's great to re-watch this classic series again!

About Season 5:
the final season (season 5) it's a bit different, despite giving full season of 21 episodes, it was facing cancellation during it's original broadcast-run, a 2 hour final episode "Freefall" was made to conclude the series, finishing the series at episode 17 instead of 21. the remaining 4 episodes ("world of trouble", "miracle man", "leap of faith" and "too much, too late") were made before "Freefall", but never aired during it's original broadcast run, only after the series cancellation on re-runs and a different network as "the lost episodes", when it was released on dvd and later blu-ray, the episodes are arranged by their original air-dates, it raised some confusion and continuity errors. to avoid this problem, watch "The Lost Episodes" before "Freefall" to get a proper ending.

Fabulous vs. Mill Creek blu ray set
to fans or whoever wants to buy Miami Vice complete series on Blu-Ray set, please do NOT buy the North American version by Mill-Creek, sure it's much cheaper then UK release and the packaging itself is decent, but the quality is inferior. it contain less blu ray discs then the UK release (which means cramming more episodes into one disc hurts the picture quality), audio issues, no subtitles, no bonus features and the cases that hold the blu ray discs are stacked on top of each-other which gives it a cheap quality feeling. the UK version by "Fabulous" is the definitive version and very highly recommended.
