It’s a slow burn, but brilliant film. Don’t expect anything stomach churning or overly shocking though. I personally only found the final scene slightly shocking, the rest of it really isn’t that bad at all. The other reviews here make it sound blatantly disturbing. It’s definitely overrated in that regard. But nonetheless, it’s a film that will stick with you. Well worth checking out.

A bunch of American guys are invited by a Swedish college classmate to spend their summer break at a remote northern Swedish community - Harga. The American's are not aware that they and others have been invited to be part of human sacrifice. Christian, one of the Americans brings his girlfriend Dani along as she has just lost her parents and sister from a tragic murder suicide that may have been prevented if Christian didn't suck so much as a boyfriend. Again and again we see how thoughtless Christain is and Dani and Christian's relationship hits rock bottom when he has sex with a young girl from the Harga village. Dani ends up winning a dance contest and is crowned the May Queen. Dani finds love and acceptance in this strange world - something that has eluded her in her old world. The Americans are killed off unitl near the end all there is left is Christian and Dani. As part of the festival, Dani gets to decide if Christian is to be sacrificed and she chooses he dies - he is put in a bear suit and burnt alive with others in a large house built for the offering. A lot of cleaver jump shots and there is a lot of subtle traditions that the Harga practice that is missed in the first viewing. Dani's look of content as her old boyfriend Christian burns to death is haunting

If you liked Hereditary, which I believe is superior, you might like this--it's a bit bizarre and perhaps silly, but interesting--not a gore flick, at all. My daughter, who enjoys a horror film, found it interesting as well. Nicely shot, too.

The Directors Cut really does give a little more definition to the films events and characters. It goes into depth with each character a little more compared to the theatrical release, but it also answers some questions that you might have. The Directors cut is brilliant, and definitely more preferred in my eyes.

Après un Hereditary déjà fantastique de par sa mise en scène minutieuse, ses performances d'acteurs incroyables et son final glaçant, Ari Aster revient donner une leçon de cinéma d'horreur alors que la grande majorité des autres productions horrifiques se vautrent dans les jump scares putassiers et licences usées jusqu'à l'os (on vous voit, The Nun et Curse of La Llorrona). Ici, la peur monte lentement mais sûrement, et le fait à la lumière aveuglante de l'été scandinave, dans un cadre profondément ancré dans un folklore païen qui défie tout manichéisme. Qui, de la communauté soudée et empathique aux pratiques étranges ou de la société matérialiste, hypocrite et sans individualiste, est réellement monstrueux ? Bref, un film hautement recommandable et un jeune réalisateur à suivre, au même niveau que Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) et Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse).

en 1985 j'avais 14 ans quand j'ai vu pour la premiere fois l'exorciste de william friedkin, une experience inoubliable!! film culte, dérangeant et qui restera une oeuvre indémodable. j'ai toujours eu une grande passion pour le cinema de genre et il faut bien l'avouer depuis de nonbreuses années c'est le plat total.... toutes les productions actuelles cela vol tres bas.... toujours le meme scenario, zombie, maisons hantées, monstres en tout genres, ça tourne en rond! avec midsommar rien de tout ça, pas de porte qui claque, pas non plu de tueurs en serie, ou d'ombre dans le noir. ici le soleil est radieux, il fait tout le temps jour et les gens sont souriant et c'est la que la force du film prend vie, ari aster arrive à créer une atmosphere anxiogène, malaisante au fur et à mesure que le film avance. franchement je n'avais pas ressenti cela depuis l'exorciste que je revisionne régulierement. les plans de camera sont magnifique, la bande son colle parfaitement au film et les acteurs sont tous très bon! résultat final on est au dessus de l'horreur classique!! une vraie claque!! merci monsieur aster et vivement la suite de vos prochain film. bonne séance à vous tous!! fabrice 73

Non è il solito film horror, anzi, non lo definirei nemmeno horror, piuttosto un dramma "travestito" da horror (come fu per l'eccezionale Hereditary). Già dall'inizio s'è immersi in un'atmosfera malata e allucinata e non sai cosa aspettarti, ma sai che prima o poi accadrà qualcosa...
Non è un film immediato, e all'inizio potrebbe non piacere, non accade esattamente quello che "ci si aspetta" e la maggior parte dell'orrore che ci si aspetterebbe è "velato", nondimeno sotto sotto c'è una folle oscurità. Oscurità contrastata dalle immagini luminose, colorate e mozzafiato...insomma, un infernale paradiso.
Bravi anche gli attori che non sono i soliti musetti belli ma frigidi, bensì è possibile sentire a pelle i loro sospetti e il loro bruciante dolore. Il finale lo definirei più triste che inaspettato, ciò che ho trovato inaspettato è il gesto della ragazza nei confronti del fidanzato (un pochino esagerato e triste).

Il 4K è ottimo, le immagini e la fotografia rasentano la perfezione.
Da non perdere!

Non è un Horror; ma è scioccante più di un horror. Non è un Thriller ma da un certo punto in poi del plot ti tiene incollato allo schermo.
Non è stracolmo di gore; ma quelle due scene madre attinte dall'antica e millenaria tradizione norrena ( compreso il Supplizio dell'aquila sanguinante) sono agghiaccianti.
E poi il totale sovvertimento dei canoni del horror; la paura sotto la luce limpida e cristallina del sole di mezzanotte , i magnifici panorami naturalistici che fanno da cornice al terrore infinito sempre strisciante . Un inquietudine angosciante che prende forma fin dalle prime scene con l'atroce evento che occorre alla protagonista ( l' interpretazione di Florence Pough è superlativa, ma le sue doti straordinarie le conoscevamo già in Lady Macbeth).
Un consiglio: acquistatelo in formato 4k. È di una definizione e nitidezza da lasciare a bocca aperta e l'hdr esalta al meglio gli scenari mozzafiato in cui si snoda la trama.
