Dreadful version of a classic movie

What did I like about this? Nothing! This mini series cannot hold a candle to the original movie staring Joan Crawford. The actors were awful especially the one playing Veda. The wardrobe mistress must have had an easy time as they didn’t seem to change clothes throughout the movie! There was none of the original glamour and style executed by Crawford in this classic rags to riches series. Boring is putting it mildly. Save your money. If you must watch it buy a second hand version. Huge disappointment.

I can't believe I am giving an HBO series one star but it was the most depressing thing I have ever watched. It really got to me, and not in a good way. I wish I had never seen it. I am left after 3 days with a bad feeling whenever I think back on it. It's not the acting or the period setting, it's the subject matter. I wanted to throttle her, or shake her really hard by the shoulders. Are there really people like this? Urgh.

Having recently seen the original movie with Joan Crawford, I found this TV mini series very much better. Allowing for the fact that the original film dates from the 1940s, I still find it hard to see why Joan Crawford won an Oscar, although I don't know what the competition was then. In any event, Kate Winslet gives an awful lot more to the part when compared with the rather expressionless performance of her predecessor. The production is, of course, is incomparable and the other roles much more natural that the original. Although very watchable, neither quite lives up to the critical acclaim they have received. If you are a film noir fan of the "golden years" of the 30s and 40s then no doubt Joan Crawford et al will be just your cup of tea. Otherwise, this is the version to go for.

To start, it was a tad slow but quickly gained momentum. Superb acting from Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce. The best from Evan Rachel Wood: I was both mesmerised by her character’s pain and her sheer nastiness. Recommended.
