I can't believe I am giving an HBO series one star but it was the most depressing thing I have ever watched. It really got to me, and not in a good way. I wish I had never seen it. I am left after 3 days with a bad feeling whenever I think back on it. It's not the acting or the period setting, it's the subject matter. I wanted to throttle her, or shake her really hard by the shoulders. Are there really people like this? Urgh.

Having recently seen the original movie with Joan Crawford, I found this TV mini series very much better. Allowing for the fact that the original film dates from the 1940s, I still find it hard to see why Joan Crawford won an Oscar, although I don't know what the competition was then. In any event, Kate Winslet gives an awful lot more to the part when compared with the rather expressionless performance of her predecessor. The production is, of course, is incomparable and the other roles much more natural that the original. Although very watchable, neither quite lives up to the critical acclaim they have received. If you are a film noir fan of the "golden years" of the 30s and 40s then no doubt Joan Crawford et al will be just your cup of tea. Otherwise, this is the version to go for.

Good period detail and music, but the acting was somewhat pedestrian, and at times rather overdone. Guy Pearce is miscast as Monty Berrigone. Half the time I couldn't make out what Veda was saying, she mumbled so. Much prefer the 1945 Joan Crawford version, which is quintessential noir. The line-up has Joan, of course, along with Jack Carson and the wonderful Eve Arden as the mouthy proto-feminist, Ida. (Love her!)

Here's the beautiful new version of Mildred Pierce, originally played by Joan Crawford who won an Academy Awards for the same role. Kate Winslet's acting is stunning and is supported by a great cast including Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood. The only bad note is the excessive length.

What a slow moving and rather dull film. I agree with one review I read which said it could be shortened to half the length. It is definitely not Kate Winslet's best acting and it was obvious it was recorded at different times as it felt disconnected somehow.
Over rated by those that gave it 5 starts!
