From living dolls to spirits wandering in search of solace or vengeance, the ghostly youth is one of the most enduring phenomena of supernatural fiction, its roots stretching back into the realms of folklore and superstition. In this spine-tingling new collection Jen Baker gathers a selection of the most chilling hauntings and encounters with ghostly children, expertly paired with notes and extracts from the folklore and legends which inspired them.
Reviving obscure stories from Victorian periodicals alongside nail-biting episodes from master storytellers such as Elizabeth Gaskell, M. R. James and Margery Lawrence, this is a collection by turns enchanting, moving and thoroughly frightening.

kids aren’t all that they seem especially when they die
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 February 2022Verified Purchase
There are many themes in this anthology and most of the stories here are not very well known. of cours, there are some that every reader off ghost stories will immediately be familiar with and a few they might know but have forgotten dand even one or two they might never have come across before. All in all, a decent collection as always by these editors of tales of the weird.

Exceptional collection of ghost stories
Reviewed in the United States on 30 January 2022Verified Purchase
I have read an absurd number of anthologies and collections of ghost stories in the past two years. Pandemic escape. This collection really stood out. The editor chose wonderful examples, even a few I'd never seen anywhere else, and gave great little intros. 5 stars.
