David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then.")

David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. A feature film followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 44 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. David has also published seven novels for younger readers.

I love almost all of David Baldacci's characters and Atlee Pine is one of the best, with an intriguing plot line. I tend to be uber critical of authors and pick out their stock in trade phrases, some of which have me grinding my teeth, but at least these books are well edited so I can forgive any banal dialogue, answers that don't make sense or obvious questions that were never asked.
Really looking forward to book three, please write faster, David, your fans will gobble up everything you produce!

Although we don't expect Baldacci novels to be high literature they are normally decently written page turners with some nicely described characters (Amos Decker for instance). This one felt like it was written for early teens who need everything explaining, every statement confirmed by a second person to make sure you get it. One was hoping the parallel stories would result in a clever solution that solved everything Atlee was seeking but we were left with an untidy ending that made this reader at least disinclined to seek out the next book. I just got my 3rd Atlee Pine by DB and I thought this would be the last in the Mercy Pine saga but I looked up the reviews for it on amazon even though I got this from my son as part of my Christmas present and I am so disappointed because it seems the saga is not finished and we are going to be dragged into another book. What on earth has happened to David Baldacci, he used to write brilliant thrillers, but now his Amos Decker and Atlee Pine books just lump ALONG. PLEASE bring back the camel club, king and maxwell, will Robbie, Jessica reel and Shaw. If you are suffering from writers block then just retire gracefully,

I like the Atlee Pine character. And her sidekick, Carol Blum. Both are well written and entirely believable. They complement each other, too. In fact all the characters are believable and relevant. One of the good things about David Baldacci is that he doesn’t crowd his books with loads of characters. He sticks to the point. And the same goes with the plots and locations, too. All in all, a wonderfully enjoyable read.

I have read thousands of books over the years and I can safely say that this is one of the worst ever. Where to begin? The awful dialogue, where if someone uses a big word, the person they're speaking to has to explain what the word means as if the reader is completely stupid. The endless references to Pine being a loner yet having countless "connections" she can phone for favours at any time? The constantly predictable twists and laughable red herrings. Utterly dreadful.
