Purists always tend to dismiss these 4 Miss Marple adaptations. I however treasure them for the presence of Margaret Rutherford one of the greatest British character actors of the 20th century. Her eccentric portrayal is one of the many she added to her CV along with Madame Arcati(Blithe Spirit) and her Oscar-winning turn as The Duchess of Brighton in The VIPS. Couple that with Australia's greatest character actor Charles "Bud" Tingwell in support as well and you have 4 delightful entertainments in anyone's book.

A collection of the famous Miss Marple - detective sleuth. A very good adaption of the books written by Agatha Christie. A classical make of murder mysteries. Very entertaining. Highly recommended.

There were 4 movies all in B&W (as expected). Also expected were 4:3 picture ratio. However, only 3 were in 4:3 full screen. And one was in 4:3 Letterbox for some strange reason, watchable but irritating. Brings back pleasant memories from long ago.

I am a huge Christie fan, and I love Miss Marple. I’ve seen all the other adaptations and read the books, but for some reason, this collection of movies just slipped past me. I now have them and am saving them for a binge session. Have only put the first disc in (to make sure it played), and everything was fine. My only gripe is that I wish they were all in one sturdy dvd case instead of four seperate small flimsy dvd cases.

"Apparently I Saw A Young Man And Woman In The Throes Of Connubial Bliss"

I remember watching these in the afternoon on BBC 2 when I was bunking off school. I'd stay home with my grandmother who lived with us. These bring back such wonderful memories and they are absolute classics. At the time of writing, I am thirty-five (and before you say it no, I do not live with my mother, I have an active sex life and I do not look like Roy Cropper) and I still love these as much now as I did then. In fact, I already own this set, I am buying this as a gift a friend who has a similar story of curling up and watching them at home as a youngster (and her grandmother apparently had the same elocution teacher as Margaret Rutherford - fancy). This is not the first copy I've bought as a gift either, it's surprising how many people actually dote on these classics. These are a must for all Agatha Christie fans, murder mystery enthusiasts and those who love a good old fashioned British black and white film now the autumn is setting in.

Margaret Rutherford IS Miss Marple
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 February 2019Verified Purchase
Well, actually she isn't. That title belongs to Joan Hickson, but here, in these 4 films, Ms Rutherford steams in full blast and makes the character entirely different, but truly wonderful. The films seem to radiate affection and cameraderie on the set, cheap as they are. George Pollock directs at a brisk pace and the scripts crackle with wit and some tension. Somehow the cream of British (and Australian) support actors are cast so that every role is filled to perfection, and what pleasure there is to be had to see Lionel Jeffries/Francesca Annis/James Bolam/Ron Moody/Derek Nimmo/Robert Morley/Muriel Pavlow/ James Robertson Justice, and hardly a supporting actor - Flora Robson. Many more of course, including Ms Hickson herself. Music from Ron Goodwin proves what an underrated composer of film music he was. The films are of course all fun and for the HOH there are good English subtitles. I am not convinced all 4 films are in their exact correct original ratio, but whatever, they still look fine. Highly recomended

Rutherford a British legend never to tire of
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2017Verified Purchase
All time classics like this are compulsive viewing and take me back to what seemed an easier and possibly simpler time . I love the old scenes of rural England way back then . The plot lines and actors go a long way to make these classics worth looking at over and over again. Amazing when you think of how old Margaret Rutherford was when these films were made, cannot imagine her been cast as the lead role in today's films which is a pity as she had so much talent and personality . Well worth buying and certainly value for money.

Four great classics for well under a tenner. What's not to like?

If you like cosy murder mysteries, Agatha Christie, Margaret Rutherford or 1960s nostalgia films, this boxed set ticks every box. For me, Rutherford's interpretation of Jane Marple has never been bettered. She's indomitable in her search for the truth. Endearing and irritating, comic yet sometimes filled with pathos, these films are a total delight.
Four discs with a running time over 5.5 hours, every film is enchanting. Some superb performances from late greats including Dame Flora Robson, Robert Morley and Ron Moody. These are timeless classics, evocative, innocent in some ways and still great viewing. These are films to savour and watch more than once. A brilliant value set

A Must for Fans of Margaret Rutherford
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 March 2018Verified Purchase
This box set containing all four Miss Marple films with the inimitable Margaret Rutherford is great value for money. Each film is on a separate DVD, each disc comes in its own case with the original artwork and cover notes. The films are black and white and the aspect ratio is 1.33:1. Optional English (and various foreign language) subtitles are available for all four films, Picture and sound quality are perfectly adequate for films from the 1960s.
Three of the films are (not too closely) based on novels by Agatha Christie, one, Murder Ahoi, is a murder mystery in the style of Ms Christie, featuring the character of Miss Marple created by her. While Rutherford's Miss Marple is far removed from the genteel little lady of the books, her much more belligerent take on the legendary amateur sleuth is highly enjoyable and by now quite iconic. And one can't help but love her sidekick Mr. Stringer (who doesn't feature in any of the books), brought to the screen by Rutherford's loving and beloved husband Stringer Davis.
Great entertainment for a rainy weekend. Probably most enjoyable for those who fondly remember these films from decades ago.
