Typical Ken Burns re imagining of history
Reviewed in the United States on 19 February 2022Verified Purchase
while many slobber over Ken Burns documentaries I find them to be lacking... for a couple of reasons.
1) he is cheap and doesn't license as much available film as he could , instead he chooses to shoot an image and then zoom in and out instead as I said license full video when available.
2) he has a habit of changing the facts to suit his narrative as he often did in the deplorable JAZZ series. All you need to do is watch the Clay fight in the UK vs Henry Cooper to understand this. The fight was notable as Cooper knocked (then) Clay down and pretty much out.... but he was saved by the bell. In the Ken Burns take on history the narrator says that between rounds they splashed water on his face blah blah and it must have worked because when the fight resumed Clay cut up Cooper and it was stopped. The reality , covered in MANY other documentaries and admitted to by Clay's trainer Dundee ... was that he was in serious trouble. Dundee cut Clay's glove/tape ... requiring a repair and giving his fighter a MUCH longer time to recover than had the fight proceeded as normal.... This bit of dirty trick helped Clay/Ali retain his undefeated status and has been caught on film , and discussed over and over.... for Ken Burns to in a very fake news sort of way miss that ... shows either a completely shoddy work ethic or a desire to not show something that could impact the narrative he began with. Lots of stuff about Joe Frazier was left out as well... shame on Ken Burns but changing facts to suit documentary film makers is common these days.... 3 stars for lots of good footage still found , just go elsewhere for the TRUE story.
