Product description
Inspired by real events, Munich reveals the intense story of the secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and assassinate the 11 Palestinians believed to have planned the 1972 Munich massacre of 11 Israeli athletes - and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. Hailed as "tremendously exciting" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), Steven Spielberg's explosive suspense thriller garnered five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Great blu ray for a film that divides people but, to me, shows Spielberg dark and dark side
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 August 2015Verified Purchase
One of Spielberg's major films and to me one of the best political ones ever made. Definitely the best about Arabs-Jews conflict. Spielberg has the guts to take a quite shocking episode and the book inspired by that without diminishing its power and strong focus on such a complicated and dramatic topic. Although being Jewish and making this film in America, he's surprisingly balanced and even quite rigid toward Israeli's politics and attitude. Basically he gives all the reasons behind the two sides, and still underlines how that of Israeli can't be based on mere revenge, since it fires up a more violent response from the other side, and so on, creating an infinite spiral and chain of violence. All in the film conspire to create this tragic, heavy, almost inevitable sense of dark destiny. The photography in the political office where Golda Meir and other officers discuss about the plan is quite unsettling, and so it is also up to the end of the movie. It's a fine, intelligent and uncommon way of telling a story like that. And the ending, set in front of Twin Towers (digitally placed where they used to be) is not just a coincidence....

Unsettling film

This film is well cast, however it is very violent and graphic in places. The Blu-ray Case is nice (although it is a HMV Exclusive). I would only recommend if you want to watch the film after reviewing the plot.

In short, this is a bad part of our recent history, chronicled in an entertaining way. Such a feat isn't easy. A sovereign country sanctions a crew of assassins to go forth into 1970's Europe and eliminate the architects of the Munich Olympic massacre. It's impossible to know exactly how accurate the scenes are depicted. I personally find it difficult to believe that any assassins can afford to be quite so selective in their targets. The movie slightly bent credence by having these men jump through hoops in order not to harm innocent bystanders. That has an almost noble feel to it but in war - no matter what form it takes - they are morals that can't always be afforded.
However this is a good film. Kudos is added by the squad's brushes with certain faktions, security services and organised crime fraternities. The spirit of the age was caught well in the street scenes, the fashions and inevitaby the music. Most of all the political obsessions of that era - some of which persist tragically to this day - give a real believability to the story.
