A mesmerising twisty read
Reviewed in Australia on 16 January 2022
Thanks to #netgalley and bookouture for the This book was yet another great domestic thriller in the D.I Dan Reilly series- like all of the books so far in this series, they can be read as stand alones, but I should warn you, once you read one it will be hard to resist the temptation of reading the entire backlist of them, they are all that good! This one centres around a perfect teen girl who goes out one night and ends up going missing. We then delve into many intricate webs of lies from both her and her family and family friends....a mesmerising read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #anna-louweatherley #thenightoftheparty #goodreads #amazonaustralia #amazonkindle #thestorygraph #litsy #bookqueen #bookstagram #domesticthriller

“In the long run, the most unpleasant truth is a far safer companion than a pleasant falsehood” – Theodore Roosevelt. This quote included at the start of this book is so fitting for this story.
I’m calling it, The Night of the Party is the first book that will be part on my best books for 2022! I absolutely loved this book and devoured it in one sitting. Part of the Detective Dan Riley series, this can easily be read as a standalone, but I do encourage you to read the other fantastic books in the series so you don’t miss out!
Anna-Lou Weatherley smashes this book right out of the park! Addicted right from the outset, the pages just turned themselves. A perfectly executed and clever psychological thriller with an eclectic cast of characters with so many secrets, it has been awhile since one made my blood boil as much as one does in this book! Oh and the twists! Just brilliant and jaw dropping… OK, I have stop this review right now as in my excitement I don’t want to give anything away, but I will end this with, I take my hat off to you Anna-Lou. Well played…Very well played!

Two couples. Three secrets. One murder.
Anna-Lou Weatherley never fails to deliver a superb thriller, complete with questionable characters - some pristine, some not so. And this addition to the DI Dan Riley series is no different...and yet it is. It certainly does not disappoint. It is a fast paced thrill ride filled with secrets, lies and a ton of deception. And a whole lot of fun getting there.
The Draytons, Evie and Tom, are hosting a dinner party for their friends Una and Jim, whom they have known since their university days. Before the starters, the couples are enjoying plenty of free flowing wine and relaxing on an unseasonably chilly November night. Jim is a GP, a quiet reserved middle-aged man, while his wife Una is the seemingly life of the party, opening her mouth before her brain is in gear. Tonight, as they enjoy each other's company, Evie's 17 year old daughter Libby makes her way to the door for a night out with best friend Katie to watch a band play when her mother stops and begs her to regale them with her talent on the piano. Then bidding them goodnight with promises to text when she gets there and to be home by 10.30pm, Libby is gone.
Throughout the evening as the dinner is well underway, Evie can't ignore the nagging sense of doom she feels...particularly when Libby fails to text her as promised. And Libby always texts to let her know she has arrived safely. Always. But tonight she hasn't and Evie is even more worried when Libby fails to respond to any of her texts. And when 10.30pm comes and goes, Evie instinctively knows something is wrong.
DI Dan Riley is called in on his day off to investigate the disappearance of Libby who her parents assure him that this is out of character for their usually responsible daughter. And Dan believes they have every right to be worried. As the chill of the evening is well set in, Dan knows that Libby will not survive the night if she is somewhere out there and so he and his team begin a search of the pathway leading from the Drayton's house towards town. When Libby's body is discovered, a murder investigation begins and as Dan digs deeper into Libby's life, he discovers that the 17 year old was not as perfect or as innocent as her mother believed. Thus exposing a very different side of Libby.
Evie refuses to believe that her beautiful sweet and perfect daughter could be so calculating and manipulative. But as more of the pieces begin to fall into place, she has no choice but to confront the horrible truth that not only was Libby not who she thought she was but that everyone has been lying to her.
Libby was the apple of Evie's eye, beautiful, talented and perfect but she wasn't the sweet angel she thought she was but rather was cold, calculating and manipulative without an ounce of remorse. And thus, she was murdered as a result.
Tom is Evie's husband, with a 19 year old son Brandon from a previous liaison, but he isn't the devoted husband he appears to be. He is hiding a secret or three that he won't want seeing the light of day.
Una is Evie's best friend from university and is little a bit jealous that she was never able to conceive as Evie had. Added to that she is plagued by guilt over the secrets she's keeping.
Jim, the quiet and reserved GP, once had a thing for Evie at uni but, sadly for him, Tom got the girl. But despite his prominent place in society, he too harbours a secret that could destroy him.
Brandon is Tom's son and Evie's step-son. The two have never really gotten along as Libby has always been Evie's world with no room for him, it seems. Brandon and Libby loathe each other and make no secret of the fact, despite onlookers believing it to be just banter. But is he hiding something far more serious?
Evie's world has collapsed with the murder of her daughter and now it is being ripped apart as secrets are uncovered and no one is who they appear to be. Two couples, a dead daughter and, not one (but), more secrets than you can poke a stick at.
There are some despicable characters in this tangled tale and none more so that Libby. She is hateful with a capital H. She is cold, callous, manipulative and narcissistic. She really does not care who she hurts or how but like all sociopaths, she knows exactly how to blend in as the perfect daughter. It really is easy to see why someone would want her dead. The question is, which one of them hated her enough to kill her? And not just kill her, but annihilate her?
THE NIGHT OF THE PARTY is such a fun read with a fast moving plot that keeps the reader engaged throughout and flipping pages till the end. I love the multiple narratives of Evie, Dan and Libby (leading up the the night in question) as we watch everything unfold and play out like a screenplay.
It's definitely an intense read filled with twists, secrets, lies and deception. There are surprises, maybe not so much for seasoned readers of this genre but there are still some twists that should keep you guessing. I did work out who killed Libby but there was one final twist near the very end that I didn't see coming, which gave it that satisfactory ending. And despite being part of a series, it suffices perfectly as a standalone.
I thoroughly enjoyed THE NIGHT OF THE PARTY...but, and it is a big but, what ensued when Dan discovered who the killer actually was just doesn't seem feasible. And definitely not reasonable. I can't say much more than that but it was the only part of the story that I found disappointing, hence the half star knock down.
Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Clare Mackintosh, Gilly Macmillan and Teresa Driscoll.

Two couples, three secrets, one murder.
The Hemmings - Una and Jim are enjoying a dinner party at the home of their very good friends, the Draytons, Evie and Tom. Libby Drayton - 17 years old, beautiful, clever, popular and such a good girl is on her way out to meet her friend Katie to see a band and promises to be home by 10:30. Tom’s older son Brandon, half brother to Libby follows her out the door shortly after.
By midnight Libby is still not home and is not answering her phone. Evie rings Katie’s mum only to learn that Katie is spending the weekend with her nanna, their was no gig. The police are called. Before long the body is inevitably found and it is brutal. Libby’s face has been obliterated!
DI Daniel Riley and DS Lucy Davis start to dig into the lives of these families and soon learn that there are some unpleasant secrets and that Libby is not the nice girl her parents thought she was. Suspects are dangled in front of us. The lives of the families are examined under a microscope and a rather ugly picture emerges.
Libby turns out to have been a manipulative, nasty piece of work. But she was not the only nasty piece of work in this story. In fact most of the cast of characters had secrets to be ashamed of. A number of people could have had a reason to kill Libby but who did the actual deed? This story had many layers and many secrets and a rather sad and poignant ending. It was a quick and enjoyable read that had me turning the pages with a flourish. I finished it in a day. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

I loved this book. All the books in this series have been fantastic and always manage to suck me in. The Night of the Party can easily be read as a stand alone, it is the reoccurrence of the Detective Dan Riley that makes it a series. But I do recommend reading them all as they are all such great stories.
17 year old Libby is murdered near her home, on the night that her parents are having a dinner party. Her mother, Evie, thinks her daughter was an angel and nobody would want her dead. Boy is she is for a shock. No spoilers but you won’t believe the twists in this. So clever and well done.

Totally gripping psychological thriller/police procedural
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 January 2022Verified Purchase
Wow! I loved this gripping, absolutely brilliantly plotted book and literally could not put it down until I'd finished.
Part psychological thriller, part police procedural, a combination I felt worked really well, the story begins with a young girl, Libby, disappearing during a dinner party. Libby's parents, Evie and Tom, are obviously completely distraught. How could their beautiful, well behaved, intelligent daughter suddenly go missing?
What sounds like a simple plot, begins to build and build, secrets and lies are all of a sudden exposed and Evie and Tom are forced to face the devastating truth that Libby may not be the sweet, obedient, perfect daughter she appeared to be.
I felt the characters were cleverly written and whilst they weren't all likeable, they all had real depth and believability. I especially felt for Evie and her desperate longing to discover the truth about what happened to Libby. I also really warmed to the police characters, especially Dan and Lucy, and look forward to continue following their stories in the author's future novels.
The twists and turns in this book kept coming and just as you think you have it figured out, the author throws in another curveball! I did guess the final twist here, but it took nothing away from the story for me.
All I can say is, you have to read this book! Most definitely highly recommended. I can't wait for Anna-Lou's next book.
Thanks to author, Anna-Lou Weatherley, publishers Bookouture and Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Pretty much devoured this book in one sitting. The story was full of interesting, intriguing and at times twisted characters who jumped off the page. The story was intense and moved along at lightning speed leaving me breathless as I followed the twisty, turny path the author had laid. I thought I had it all sussed a couple of times only to find I was wrong so I stopped trying to guess and then just enjoyed the ride. This is the first book I've read by this author but it won't be the last. Have downloaded all other books in the series. Highly recommended.

It’s one of those books that make you go “just one more chapter” . I really enjoyed this book and found myself recommending it to friends in my Facebook book club group, gym friends ,works friends and my mam,who ended up buying it thay same day, also my friend did. This book will make a cracking TV show for Netflix or a ITV drama. I do hope it’s turned into one. The best book I’ve read in a long while.

This is the fourth Detective Dan Riley book I've read from Anna. I inhaled it all in one day, I couldn't put it down, I was that gripped! All I can saw is WOW! The twists just had me gasping. I really hope someone from Netflix reads Anna's Dan Riley books and commissions them for Netflix series. It would be a worthy binge watch for sure. Anna you've done it again another 5* read.
