5.0 out of 5 starsAnother brilliant who done it

Terrific crime mystery leaves you guessing until the end. The continued development of the main characters and their back stories and everyday lives brings these stories to life. In this book DS Marie Evans scores a lot of the limelight along with supporting characters Laura Archer and Sam Page.

Said by Marie at the end of the story. That pretty much sums up how these detectives solve their cases. The are not smart or clever. Their results are pretty much the result of dumb luck,, or the work of their victims.

If you try to not think too much about the content, this is a pleasant read.

3.0 out of 5 stars fans of the series will enjoy this latest instalment
Reviewed in Australia on 19 November 2021
Latest crime thriller by prolific author Joy Ellis is the seventh in the Jackman and Evans series and not one encountered previously. This time, the detectives are on the hunt for a burglar who only steals photographs. A classic police procedural albeit a cosy crime novel. As the investigation unfolds, the bodies begin to mount yet the clues seem to lead nowhere. Overall, a leisurely paced gentle crime venture with a three-star rating. Whilst the crime element deserved a higher rating, the seemingly unnecessary distraction of the mundane lives of the crime team lessened its appeal – swathes of them sleeping or gathering for meals added little gravitas to the mystery. However, fans of the series will enjoy this latest instalment. With thanks to Joffe Books and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and are made without fear or favour.

I have read, and loved, all of the previous books by Joy Ellis but this one felt like it was missing something. I thought it was overlong and rambled to its conclusion. The two storylines I felt were fairly predictable and had so many police characters that I was expecting at least one of them to be written out of the story. It is the first Joy Ellis book that I almost didn’t bother to finish, let’s hope we get back to the usual 5 star storyline with the next book.

It was okay but not one of her best , seemed to drag on to long readable plot , to drawn out .

This is the first , and probably only, Joy Ellis that I have read. She does the unforgivable, at least for me. Inventing places. I only got to page eleven before the hackles were vertical. Saltern-le-Fen doesn't exist and neither does Fenchester. It is quite normal for authors to create entirely fictional universes or populating real places with fictional people but indiscriminate mixing grates. For instance , here there is reference to Hogwarts which does exist as a fictional place; The RAF , a well known British military organisation, so why create fictional towns and villages in a real UK? It may be your cup of tea, but isn't mine. I struggled on for a chapter or two, but everything seemed contaminated. There was even a forensic error in the description of poor Nan's demise. The author says she missed the top step and fell , but the first responder discovered a trip wire had been installed across the top step. So if she had missed the top step , how could her ankle have a red wheal on it from hitting a wire? My attention was lost by then anyway. So, not for me. Maybe not for you.
