5.0 out of 5 starsAnother brilliant who done it

Terrific crime mystery leaves you guessing until the end. The continued development of the main characters and their back stories and everyday lives brings these stories to life. In this book DS Marie Evans scores a lot of the limelight along with supporting characters Laura Archer and Sam Page.

3.0 out of 5 starsWe get there, one way or the other.

Said by Marie at the end of the story. That pretty much sums up how these detectives solve their cases. The are not smart or clever. Their results are pretty much the result of dumb luck,, or the work of their victims.

If you try to not think too much about the content, this is a pleasant read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too soppy and sentimental for my liking

I’m giving up on this book two thirds of the way through. It reminds me a bit of Enid Blyton’s style of writing. That’s perhaps a bit harsh, but either way this book just isn’t doing it for me.

The writing style was a bit annoying. It seemed childish and old fashioned .The plot was good, maybe a bit tarfetched. But as they say, truth is stranger than fiction

No cohesion or strong central plot just a mess of blurred characters dashing around in a fog. of confusion. Just dreadful.

Rather too much 'old school' policing for my taste. Wouldn't read any more in the series.

This book could have been finished in 150 pages and received 5 stars. But instead it's long, repetitive, with unnecessary dialogue, silly, and boring. Very unexpected from Ellis. Let's hope for better in th future.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring and contrived
Reviewed in the United States on 9 January 2022

In a small rural area houses of single women are broken into. Nothing is stolen, except pictures of their young male children, grandchildren, or nephews. Scary for the victims, annoying for the police, a nuisance. But what seemed initially as a prank, escalates. People get murdered. DI Jackman and DS Evans once more bravely throw themselves into the fray. A ton of penny psych, another baffling case, a Miss Marple-like amateur sleuths, a chase - everything is thrown in with poor results. The cardboard characters are totally unbelievable, the psychology primitive, the situations mostly contrived, and the plot artificial. Nothing creates that delicious shudder of well-written thriller. In my book - another boring book.
