5.0 out of 5 starsFor Fans and for Newcomers
Reviewed in Australia on 12 October 2021
I've played most of the past Metroid games, but I recognise that this game was designed with newcomers in mind — and both groups will have a blast.

An overall amazing Metroidvania experience that proves why the Metroid series was capable of kickstarting a genre. You don't need to have played the older instalments to enjoy it, as the game opens with a recap of the past few games. Movement and controls are extremely fluid and satisfying, and the Switch hardware allows for some cutscenes and sequences that are just a spectacle to behold. There's nothing really to complain about, because it's the best possible modern rendition of the Metroid format we could've got.

TLDR:
Graphics: crisp and detailed.
Story: a satisfying twist and ending to this arc spanning 35 years.
Gameplay: satisfying and responsive (not super floaty and slow like the older instalments)

I recommend this to all Switch owners.

(PS. I saw another review saying that the sounds from the game alarmed their dog — this was not true in my case, and I own two dogs. Of course, that could just be an anomaly, but there are no sounds that personally disturbed me or my pets.)

2.0 out of 5 starsBuyer beware. Not NEW. You may receive a USED game.
Reviewed in Australia on 25 October 2021
So I was expecting this to be a brand new (unopened) game. It wasn't.

I have attached pictures showing the product just after removing it from the delivery packaging.

There was no plastic wrap on the game, as is normal for new Switch games, and when I checked the game cartridge it clearly shows scratches on the metal contacts clearly showing previous use. The box also had a minor crack in the spine.

I have since checked that the game loads, and it does, so I'll likely not return it, but you should know that you may be paying for a second hand game. It wasn't clear to me at the time of purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Note To dog owners - did anyone else have a similar pet response?
Reviewed in Australia on 9 October 2021

My dog is not one that is faint hearted (veteran at the fireworks) but it showed some strange nervous behaviour and began chewing desperately at the carpet ends Under the dining table (very uncharacteristic thing to do) ... in response to the game audio/ sounds. It seemed troubled by the sound. This stopped when I muted the game. Didn’t get very far as this is also my first Metroid.

So much to like about this game.
The movement of Samus is just sublime, it makes exploring the huge maps a pleasure. I found myself wanting to explore every inch of each map/area, while using the map to plan out the best path to take. This was especially important when going through the EMMI areas, which has brought a whole new level of excitement to Medroid. The sound effects and music sound incredible when played with good headphones. The level design and the visuals blew me away and was so much more than I was expecting. You really do get drawn into the game and feel like you are apart of it. I especially liked the areas with water, looked incredible. Lots of varied boss fights that are very challenging and rewarding and make you use every ability you have collected along the way. If you’ve played a Metroid game before or like this genre then you will love this game. The best game I have played in a while 10/10

The game was not plastic wrapped and the game card had scratches on the gold contacts which is what happens when it's been put in a machine prior.

No where on the site did I see anything that this would be 'second hand' or 'refurb', you might want to re-assess if you're buying as a gift.

I haven't tested yet, not sure if I will return.

A really good game with well balanced gameplay and progressive system that rewards players with challenges and bosses to properly utilise the new upgrades and weapons. E.M.M.I are an excellent addition in terms of a challenge to not make the game boring during travelling between locations and exploration before a boss fight.

Great game for both metroid fans and newcomers alike.
