3.0 out of 5 stars Great with a few serious drawbacks

I just got this and am very impressed. Very lightweight and comfortable. The button are intuitive and easy to use. I love that it's rechargeable.

What I'm less than thrilled with:

* The 360 Lumen is pretty misleading, since it has a max of 30 seconds before stepping down to lower lumens. It should probably be advertised as 190 lumens with 360 burst mode or something.

* The headband does not fit on the lamp very well. it bunches the band up which is likely to deform the band over time. Not a big deal, but a bit annoying. The problem is half of the strips you attach the band do has solid sides so the band can't fully slip over it.

Those quibbles aside, I expect I'm going to really love this headlamp.

UPDATE, Jan 2018:
Downgraded to 3 stars.
I've discovered it does not hold its charge very long. I fully charged it 2 weeks ago, hung it in my closet, and went to use it today. It was totally drained. Also, my wife grabbed it a couple weeks ago so she could see while painting our pantry. It died after about 30 minutes. I do think she had it on high, but she was pretty disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Headlamp - No more AAA's for Me
Reviewed in the United States on 2 July 2019
Colour Name: WhiteVerified Purchase
I was a big believer in a AAA headlamp for hiking to gain the ability to swap batteries in the field if needed. As it turns out, I rarely used the entire charge in one evening, and I already bring a portable battery to recharge my phone, so the AAA batteries were just wasted.

The light has very sensible modes, the brighter red is great for night time around the camp, the medium white is just fine for trail hiking, and the high is enough power to find a flag or a cairn off in the distance. Great light, I'd certainly buy another one if I lost it. I did replace the headband with some 1/8" shock cord, it's much lighter now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Ultralight headlamp. Great charge-retention.
Reviewed in the United States on 18 November 2018
Colour Name: BlackVerified Purchase
This is a fantastic USB-rechargeable headlamp; ultralight with a powerful beam. According to my scale it weighs 31 grams with my DIY shock cord/grosgrain headband. The supplied headband is nice, but weighs about as much as the lamp itself. The headlamp features a dedicated button for white beam and also one for red beam.

I head read some reviews complaining about the headlamp not holding a charge. I haven't found this to be the case at all. I topped it off 3 weeks ago after an overnight trip and it is still holding a charge.
And wow, it has the brightest red LED lamp I have ever owned. The lock feature (press and hold both buttons) is especially handy to keep the headlamp from accidently being switched on while stowed away. This rechargeable headlamp also functions during charging.

My only regret is that I didn't order one sooner. The Nitecore NU-25 has now replaced my (still working) BD headlamp as my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great headlamp for backpacking
Reviewed in the United States on 21 May 2020

My wife and I each bought one of these for backpacking. So we wanted something lightweight as well as durable. I was worried that it wouldn’t be very weather resistant but the packaging gives it an IP66 rating, so that should good enough for hard rain. I don’t plan on submerging it, which it is not rated for. It comes with a USB Charging Cable with a nice Velcro cable management ribbon on the cable. Seems sturdy enough. It also comes with a USB plug, which feels a little lightweight—like hollow—and therefore has the sense of feeling cheap.

Now for the headlamp! The headlamp straps are adjustable, and it’s easy to adjust. There’s also two long strip of silicone beads around the front area to prevent slippage. That is a nice touch. The white headlamp LED has an ultra low, medium and high setting. I’ve attached some pictures. The red LED has three settings ultra low, high and blinking.

There is no plastic piece to prevent the top buttons from being pressed but you can hold both buttons for 3 seconds until a red LED blinks through the semi-opaque buttons, to lock them, before packing it. Then when you take it out you hold them both again for 3 seconds until the low LED light turns on. There’s also an SOS setting I believe. The headlamp is impact resistant to a meter.

Charging took about two hours. According to instructions the lowest setting 1 lumen will last about 160 hours 3 meter distance, mid 38 lumens for 8 hours 27m, high 190 lumens 5 hours 81m. There’s about 10 different light settings, so it’s pretty robust.

I can’t wait to try it out on our next trip to see how it does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small and Mighty
Reviewed in the United States on 3 December 2021

Backpacker here. I look for light weight, effective, an ability to solve several problems, and for battery operated items - long life, quick charging, and low mAh. We have multiple tools to keep charged so nothing that goes in my pack or on my body can be power greedy.
This is my second Nitecore NU25. I found myself using my first one so much - both on and off the trail - that I bought a second one for my hiking partner.
Safe to say I’m a fan.
The red light lowest setting is perfect for tent activities. I’ve hiked into the night hours with that same setting, but find that the second power setting give me a better picture on unfamiliar trails. I can pick up rocks and roots, keep from getting my eye poked out with a branch, and avoid nighttime spider webs that always seem perfectly set up to catch unsuspecting hikers in the face. Orb weaver anyone?
I know we shouldn’t be hiking around at night, but it happens sometimes. This light has gotten me out of some nighttime jams.
It excels for use around camp and anywhere else you want a headlamp. I don’t need solar flare strength lights for most of what we do. The options in this light are just right for everything that needs doing.
The battery life seems ample - as I’ve never run it out to zero. It charges surprisingly fast and is good to go quickly. I think it sips about 300 mAh, leaving plenty for other items.
The light can be removed from its strap and sewed directly into your favorite wool cap for lighter cool weather trekking.
The strap on my first one has stretched a bit over these last could of years, but I can still snug it up when I need to.
I’ve avoided rechargeable lights in the past because I just preferred to carry a few extra batteries, but this light changed my mind of light that. It’s been reliable and a good tool for managing the moon side of the world.

1.0 out of 5 stars This thing sucks

ok first, let me say that i do not know how the H3LL this has such a high rating! I am an electrician and am always working in the dark and constantly wear a head lamp. I looked up some "best head lamp" lists and this was on many. why pay 40 bucks for this tiny stupid thing and IS NOT BRIGHT WHAT-SO-EVER, when you can pay $20 for 2 that have more modes and are 1,000 lumens.
This thing sucks huge donkey nuts! Do not waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very dim + no battery life
Reviewed in the United States on 11 November 2018
Colour Name: BlackVerified Purchase
This light was only barely bright enough to run with at night. I have a 5-year-old 360 lumen bike light and compared the two lights, with this one on its maximum setting immediately after charging. The bike light blew this one away. It had a better spread and was much brighter. So the claim that this light is 360 lumens is clearly a lie.

As for battery life, I charged it up one day, leaving it on the charger until the next evening when I went out to run. I used the light for around 30 minutes on the high setting. It was disappointingly dim but was still bright enough at the focal point of the beam that I was able to avoid obstacles as long as I concentrated carefully on the path ahead of me. When I got home I placed the light on my desk. The next evening I went out to run again. Within 3 minutes of use, the battery was drained and the light too dim to be used even for walking. I went home and switched out for my 10-year-old headlamp that this was supposed to replace.

Time and time again I learn not to buy cheap Chinese garbage from Amazon. I bought this one because the reviews on the expensive headlamps weren't very good either. But this product is unusably bad. I need a lamp that lasts longer than 30 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very compact and light for such a bright light

This headlamp is incredibly small and lightweight for the power it provides. I have a high powered petzl headlamp and the highest setting on this niteore seems to be about the same brightness as the highest setting on the petzel. The battery life is not great but is extremely reasonable for such a small size. And it will can be recharged very quickly with a battery bank. For a backpacking trip I doubt any The battery life is extremely reasonable for such a small size.

I also have the nu30. In comparison the nu25 Is about half the size and weight. The brightness is not that noticeably different. However the light spread is very different. The 25 is much more diffuse whereas the 30 is a spot light. The 30 also has far more battery life. Bottom line on the 30 versus the 25. The 30 is good for all night adventures like trail running or lots of night hiking and mountaineering. The 25 is good for backpacking or bringing just in case.

The strap is oversized for such a small light. The strap weighs almost as much as the light! Nitecore should design a more minimal strap.

The annoying thing about this light is that to change light settings one must turn it off and cycle through the different power levels. There is no way to just temporarily turn the brightness up and then go back to a lower setting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overly Complicated Controls -- AC adapter fell apart.
Reviewed in the United States on 19 March 2020

I am updating this review, and leaving old one below b/c as it turns out, the battery was not bad in my unit.

If you hold down both lights on this headlamps, you can inadvertently lock it. I guess this is a feature if you are backpacking and don't want the lights to turn on while packed away, but in general going thru all the control modes, they are way too complex for this little headlamp. There are too many lighting modes, and holding down on any button for too long can cause you to go into an SOS mode or some other random mode.

I would only dock half a star for that, b/c overall the headlamp works as intended, but also the AC adapter that I received with it fell apart. When I unplugged it from the wall, one of the metal receptors stuck in the wall outlet. It was actually very concerning b/c the outlet stopped working. I had to shut the breaker off in my home to pull the receptor out safely (pulling it out with your hands can create a path for electricity to ground and could be a potential electrocution hazard).

I just used another micro USB charger I have lying around for the time being.

This headlamp overall works well while actually running. Control modes for lights are annoying. AC Adapter cheaply made.

Out of the box this device worked fine. Roughly 3 months later, I noticed that the light wouldn't last as long as when i got this initially. Today, roughly 4 months after I bought the device, it does not hold a charge at all.

The battery in this device is rubbish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for its intended use- ultralight lighting.

I bought this for hiking, backpacking, etc where weight savings is crucial. I have no idea if it's the lightest weight headlamp out there but it's light enough that I can't imagine much better. It also has a surprisingly long battery life for its size\weight and can easily be charged up with a battery pack if you need that much time (I usually carry a small one for multi-day excursions to charge my phone, light, etc). Unlike a couple of other headlamps I recently bought this one still works after months, which is also nice.

The light output isn't great compared to heavier units. If you're looking for a night application where weight is not an issue, you can probably do better. But if you want something that will put out enough light to hike and set up camp without weighing you down, I would definitely recommend this.
