2.0 out of 5 stars Quality & functionality issues; could be great backpack light in next generation with some redesign.

Power level reports 3 levels, when at least 4 would be useful -- no change in report between 100% and "more than 50%, so 51% and 100% get the same reading. Also, flashing power indicator is obscuredd by a finger whih must hold the button to get the test, so the light should be moved elsewhere.

Probably there enough functions to prefer 3-4 buttons to the supplied two.

Buttons are inoperable with even light liner gloves, and difficult with bare fingers -- this really really needs to be fixed to warrant more than 3 stars.

Quality control is so lacking that the non-functioning red flasher on mine came through. Testing all the modes on each light should be done as a matter of course before packiging. This gets the rating down to 2 stars.

The next generation would hopefully allow at least 360 lumens in continous operation without stepping down to 190lm.

I have not had a moonless night to test all the levels so will pass on those.

Battery life in youtube tests are not really bad but quite a bit more is desirable for many use scenarios.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent headlamp

First of all temper your expectations. This is not a small sun, nor is it super tough. It’s a small plastic lightweight headlamp. For what I use a headlamp for; which is looking for stuff in my tent in the middle of the night , or looking for stuff in my car it does a excellent job. I like how the first tap of the light I’m not accidentally setting off a flash bang in the middle of the night blinding me. I also love the flood light capability by just holding down the on button. Though I’m starting to get used to the red light function to save my night vision. It’s ample enough to do what you need to. When I purchased this I was worried about the discharge that some of the other reviewers wrote about but either they fixed it or maybe they got defective ones but mine works fine and no issues with discharging when sitting in a climate controlled house. As a word of wisdom when you have a tiny lithium battery charge it slow don’t be putting your iPad wall charger thinking it will be charged in 3minutes. Though it will charge it will also heat your battery up and destroy its lifespan. I like the nu25 as long as you aren’t expecting functional 360 lumens as the burst mode is a joke or if your wanting a tank of a headlamp as it literally feels like your holding a tictac container on your forehead. I think it will suit most casual people fine. It is odd tho having a headband that’s just as heavy as the light itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super light - great design

HUGE PRO for hikers - independent control of the red light. Turn on your red light without having to cycle through white light first. Also, turns on in the low setting, then cycles up to higher settings! This is a huge benefit when you get to camp late and don't want to bother sleeping hikers.

USB rechargeable. Charges in a little over an hour and has very solid battery life for such a small unit.

Super small and light weight but kicks out plenty of light to hike by. I guess that makes it the ideal backpacking headlamp, huh?

I won't lie, I'll miss the auto-adjusting brightness feature on my Petzl headlamp, but that is a very easy trade to make for something that weighs less than half as much, takes up about half the space, and doesn't have to cycle through bright white light in order to turn on the red.

The only (very minor) complaint: For a headlamp that seems targeted at ultralight junkies, the head strap is a tad heavy, more than doubling the overall weight. It's comfortable, but I bet with a little more development, they could find a material that works just as well and be a bit more UL friendly. I think most UL hikers will probably ditch the headband and make a DIY replacement.

Otherwise, this is a killer HL for backpackers at a great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth buying for auxiliary LEDs alone, hard to press buttons
Reviewed in the United States on 20 February 2020

This headlamp is very impressive for its size. It's not as bright as my original Black Diamond Storm, but it's less than half the size and no need to carry batteries (I have a power bank in case I need to recharge). It seems to have a slightly wider main beam that doesn't reach/throw as far as Storm does.
Both the red and the CRI "camping" LEDs are excellent and way better than the Storm- both cast a much wider and nicely diffused beam for campsite illumination.
It's worth buying this light just for those two auxiliary LEDs and bring a stronger second headlamp or flashlight (I always carry backup lights anyway). Red LED always has 2 brightness levels.
The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the buttons are rather small and very stiff and, as a result, hard to press (and probably even worse with gloves or say, cold/frozen hands). There's also no memory for the last selected brightness level which would be nice to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bomber, Bright, and Light

I think this is one of the best rechargeable headlamps out there. The NU20 is just as good, but simpler. I've had both. The battery lasts a very long time on the lowest setting and recharges super fast. The highest brightness and the turbo mode are only for momentary use, like when you've just heard a noise by your tent and need to pierce the darkness with the light of a small neutron star on your forehead, only to find out it was a deer. The medium brightness mode lasts a decent time, but I try to limit use when backpacking. I sometimes go out for 8 days and prefer to have the headlamp last the whole way on it's own without needing help from the battery bank. Using just the low setting, I can have it on 2-3 hours every day and it'll make it no problem. The lowest setting is enough to set up the tent and plenty to make dinner. Sometimes I'll kick it up to medium when clearing the tent spot of sharp things. Low is good enough to hike through rocky trail for me, but I have to hold the headlamp in my hand to get more contrast. I don't think medium and higher modes help too much with dust covered rocks that blend in, if the light source is coming from your forehead, but other people disagree. (they're wrong, btw) The medium mode is bright enough to mountain bike with during the climb. The high mode is good enough for downhill, if it's not long enough to kill the battery.

I highly recommend swapping the headband out with mini shock cord or, even better, the headband from a kid's walmart headlamp which can be had for $1 and comes with 2 batteries that will fit your garage door opener. Win-Win! Take the smaller elastic band and adjust it for your head, then cut the excess off. Burn the end a little with a lighter, then fold it over and staple it to keep it from pulling back through. Glue/sew a chunk of felt to the bare plastic on the headlamp and you'll be right around 1.16-1.2 oz. The headlamp weighs 1.85oz with the normal fat headband.

Super lightweight, chargest fast and lasts for a long time! I bought this for a hiking trip, but I actually use it really often in the garage while working on my car as well, it's really bright which is surprising for how lightweight it is! I also really like that it charges with microusb instead of a proprietary connector, so I can just charge it with the same cable for my bluetooth speaker I already have in the garage. I've used it enough that the band has started to stretch from wearing it so often, but I've just kept tightening the band and so far it fits just fine still!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight, rugged, reliable!

Wow - these little lights are incredible! I've used this unit for more than a month worth of camping, hiking and general outdoor activity. It's light enough that I forget that I'm wearing it, bright enough to see everything I need to (and everything else with the TURBO mode), and with enough of a battery that it gets me through the night without worry of it going dead.

I bought the NU25 based on reviews from other hikers who were searching for lightweight options for backpacking, and haven't been disappointed! That being said, this is a SMALL headlamp (US quarter in pictures for size comparison), so it wouldn't be difficult to misplace if you're inclined to have things just laying about. The battery capacity is more than enough for me to go several evenings of use, but I also use the lower power settings unless the situation really calls for a very bright light.

Now for the pros/cons:
Pros:
-Ultralight, the head strap weighs just as much as the light itself.
-Easily rechargeable with the included micro-usb cable.
-Both white and red LED options.
-Multiple power options for both red and white LED's.
-Quick to recharge and plenty of power!
-Comfortable to wear, no worries about slipping off or pressing into your forehead too much.

Cons:
-Not as cheap as easily accessible headlamps (but you get what you pay for!)
-Comparably dim to most entry-level headlamps (but more than enough if you're comfortable only seeing everything within 80 feet, instead of 500 feet!).

In conclusion, an excellent choice if you're needing a lightweight headlamp for any outdoor activities, visibility while running, or just to keep around for emergencies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ultralight headlamp option!

I still need to do long-term field testing of this headlamp, but so far I'm super impressed. My previous headlamp was the Black Diamond ReVolt rechargeable lamp, but I always thought it was bulky, heavy, and not that bright when night hiking.

The Nitecore is bright, light weight, and because it's so compact it is less likely to bob or bounce on the head. I also like that it has a dedicated button for the red light and I'm less likely to get lost in the various modes selections.

So far the only theoretical strike against it is that the battery isn't field replaceable. The benefit of something like the ReVolt is that it can use generic AAA batteries. But that said, as more of my kit is dependent on carrying a USB rechargeable battery pack, I'm getting more comfortable with with that as a core component of my backcountry system. If I'm solo hiking or in a very remote area, I always have a backup plan in case I have a total electronics failure.

Also, for the gram counters out there, there are some good youtube videos on replacing the headband with bungee cord to make it even lighter. Personally, I prefer a more robust headband for comfort and stability. Also, the included headband feels high quality - soft against the skin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great light, great weight, perfect headlamp

I had an older headlamp that never stayed put and so was rarely used. This was a youTube person's recommendation and I gave it a try. I walk my dog on my wooded property with rocks/downfall ... and other wildlife. In the dead of Winter we have 4 dark walks. Also, at 66, I like to walk with hiking poles. This headlamp stays put on my bare head, over hats and hoods and is easy to adjust. The angle of the beam adjusts well and it throws out a LOT of light. I get a heads up for other wildlife ... the red eyes!! and can keep track of my dog as well - he wears a lighted collar, but from some angles it was tough. I have not really used the night vision except to test in my dark entry. Battery life is excellent and it recharges fast also. VERY, very happy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Basically best in class
Reviewed in the United States on 15 June 2022

There is a reason that basically every popular YouTuber and gearhead list ranks this light as best of the best.

It has every feature you want, none you don't, and is super lightweight even its default configuration.

I found that the battery life was more than enough for a four night campout, including one night of reading a couple hours with insomnia. I haven't tested it night hiking or prolonged white light outdoors, but if you are conscious of using red light when you can and only turning it on as bright as you need it and when you need it, I imagine it's basically the perfect headlamp you can get in 2022. It's hard for me to even conceive of how it could be improved.
