5.0 out of 5 starsAn engrossing tale of teenage trials and tribulations
Reviewed in Australia on 21 April 2019
I very much liked the style of the author's writing which made for very clear and authentic pictures of the scenes she was writing about. She wrote an account of teenagers in some turmoil about their lives and how they should or could fit into society, in a very sensitive way. She touches on family violence and female sexual abuse, peer pressure and bullying, poor self esteem and changing self image. The main theme of the novel is a very poignant love story between two people from differing social backgrounds. I enjoyed reading this book very much.

3.0 out of 5 starsNormal people
Reviewed in Australia on 8 April 2019
Normal People was well written but dragged on. It was mainly an exploration of the characters both of whom had good intentions but couldn’t face what was obvious. They seemed to put themselves and the reader through a lot of unnecessary anguish. There is not a lot of plot development, they move around a bit but nothing terribly interesting happens. Yes they were both nice people but nobody is normal of course when you scratch the surface a little. They both tried so hard not to offend each other or depend on each other they continued on floundering through life. Which is what normal people do. So a good insight into the characters thoughts but you feel like giving both of them a good shake. There’s a lot of over analysing going on but the writing is very good but left me feeling unsatisfied.

2.0 out of 5 stars Struggled to finish this book
Reviewed in Australia on 10 April 2019

I got bored reading this book. I did not find the characters interesting and could not relate to them in any way, which to me is what gets you into a good book. They did not seem like normal people to me. Nothing seemed to happen except those two meeting up and agonising over their unrealistic relationship. Way too introspective and too much wallowing around over the same ground with no storey line. I can see they it is well written but don’t understand why this book would be up for an award.

J DIXON
4.0 out of 5 stars It covers two coming-of-age stories not just one.
Reviewed in Australia on 2 June 2019

For older readers, if you want to remember what it was like to run the gamut of life in high school this will probably fit the bill. For younger readers, it shows up the time-old struggles of growing up and trying to fit in with an illusive, and usually temporary, concept of what's 'normal.' For one of the protagonists, peer pressure stops him from being honest - even with himself. For the other, who was dealing with much more mental pressure that just what presented at school, we are taken on an often painful journey of self-discovery. Overall, the story unfolded in a realistic way and was generally well-written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not necessarily for everyone
Reviewed in Australia on 6 January 2020

I bought this book after reading recommendations from a range of people. I gave it to my daughter in law to read first. She was not enthused by it. I wondered why? So I sat down and read the whole thing from cover to cover in one sitting, not my usual approach. I was not aware that it predominantly revolved around sex, I was disappointed, not offended - just disappointed, to discover that. The book left a lot to be desired for me overall.

Angie
4.0 out of 5 stars Clever and engaging

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Sally Rooney's writing is clever and acerbic and this, combined with an interesting structure (changing POVs and jumps in time, looking back at the events between those jumps), worked to keep me engaged and entertained. I did think the ending was a little saccharine, in light of the rest of the book, and some of the (secondary) characters felt a little two-dimensional and/or caricatured, but Sally Rooney's brilliant writing and ability to tell a story made it easy to forgive any minor flaws in plot or characterisation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully Written Love Story
Reviewed in Australia on 5 February 2019

I thoroughly enjoyed this deeply felt and sensitively explored story of first love. It's incredible that this was written by such a young person- the insightful wisdom she reveals in the inner life of the characters is impressive. She writes with a simple yet poetic flair. The story follows the on-off love affair of two young people, first at school and then later at university. I really cared about the charactersI, which for me is the most important thing in keeping me engaged in the story. My only negative is that I didn't feel satisfied by the ending. it wasn't really an ending... I thought, is there a sequel?

1.0 out of 5 stars A most depressing read - particularly if you are female
Reviewed in Australia on 20 September 2020

Could a book get more depressing? Female starts off not able to speak up for herself, gains an ascendency in pat 2 only to completely lose her self esteem and that for all other women in all the remaining chapters. I felt so low when i had finished it. Don't read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two lovers who stay apart but are drawn together
Reviewed in Australia on 26 November 2020
Verified Purchase
Two people connect, but for some reason they won't settle into a fixed relationship together; they're always drifting apart, yet drawn together irresistibly. It seems they are empty without the other to complete themselves, but they're scared of the vulnerability and the overwhelming power of the other. They don't resolve this contradiction; their lives barrel on, in different directions. Reading the ending, I felt twisted inside, sad. Rooney writes with grace; her prose is comforting. I don't want to put the book down. However, the tension is at times frustrating. It's as if the characters are unaware of themselves, or simply can't find what they truly need. But Rooney does understand love and captures it beautifully.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible
Reviewed in Australia on 16 September 2020

I forced myself to finish this book. Big mistake. It was so terrible that by the end I wanted to tear the pages out and burn them. The very few moments of insightful reflection was not enough to overcome the terrible writing and lack of any plot or character growth. For supposedly smart people, both of the characters are decidedly stupid and unperceptive. I would give it zero stars if possible. A total waste of time.
