Douglas Preston is the author of thirty-six books, both fiction and nonfiction, twenty-nine of which have been New York Times bestsellers, with several reaching the number 1 position. He has worked as an editor at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and taught nonfiction writing at Princeton University. His first novel, RELIC, co-authored with Lincoln Child, was made into a movie by Paramount Pictures, which launched the famed Pendergast series of novels. His recent nonfiction book, THE MONSTER OF FLORENCE, is also in production as a film. His latest book, THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD, tells the true story of the discovery of a prehistoric city in an unexplored valley deep in the Honduran jungle. In addition to books, Preston writes about archaeology and paleontology for the New Yorker, National Geographic, and Smithsonian. He is the recipient of numerous writing awards in the US and Europe, including an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Pomona College. He currently serves as president of the Authors Guild, the nation's oldest and largest association of authors and journalists.

As always this was a wonderful story and as always now I will have to wait ages for the next one! I can never get enough of Pendergast and " Constance. I liked that there was more of Proctor in this book and finally got some answers as to his past. I had only one small niggle and that was with editing - there were many instances of "of" and "off" being wrongly used and for a book that uses language so effectively it jarred just a little. It wasn't enough to spoil the story - nothing can do that for a Pendergast book. I hope the guys are writing the next one already because the waiting is hard.

I love the Pendergast series and the book is great so far however full of errors which I assume has happened on conversion. Even a name was transposed to the wrong person, very disappointing. I would have thought it would have been checked properly before being made available to read. I'm only about 14% into the book and am constantly finding mistakes eg "of" should be "off", "cofin" should be "coffin" etc. Not a good look.

We also get to know more about those people closest to him, come face to face again with an old enemy, and still there are surprises that will keep you hooked. This story will be more profound if you have read earlier books in the series. Fantastic read.

Stuck in a Narrative Loop

Wow. This is the 16th Pendergast outing. I have remained loyal throughout with a few disappointments along the way. The Obsidian Chamber is one of those disappointments. I believe the authors are not only complacent but they are growing contemptuous of their once-fan base. It is almost like they want us to rise up and demand more of them. That is exactly what I am doing in this review.

Guys, please return to the fire and magic of The Cabinet of Curiosities. You are stuck in a narrative loop. You need a breakout premise. There are hints that you may take Constance and Procter on their own adventures. Who knows? That may work but I am not sure I would dial in. Pendergast is still the draw. This avatar mix of Sherlock Holmes, Jason Bourne, Spooky Mulder and Dr. Laszlo Kreisler has been fun but now he is a drag. Hopefully, you can rekindle this series...so many are hoping you do.

I've stopped halfway through. I'm trying to enjoy it and I'm sure I will, once someone releases the correct version. This one is absolutely littered with grammatical and spelling mistakes. It's an absolute mess.
