David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then.")

David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. A feature film followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 44 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. David has also published seven novels for younger readers.

David is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across the United States.

One good story dated

This is good detective story in a line stretching back to Dasheill Hammet. There are lots of twists and turns even if we suspect the ending it's entertaining getting to the final reveal in the court room. As with all of this genre the detective is the main suspect. We don't know what evidence he has because David keeps that secret.

Ten percent of the novel is taken up by smoking, more time than drinking and sex. There are plenty of anachronisms. I'm pretty sure sure they would not have said " I'm sorry for your loss". Lady love what's that all about. Apart from that it is a good read.

A good one, indeed.

I can't recall ever reading a David Baldacci novel prior to this one. I think it was the protagonist's surname of Archer, which evoked images of Sam Spade and Miles Archer in The Maltese Falcon, so I figured anyone named Archer as the main character of a book meant a rollicking good PI story. I was not disappointed. Loved every word of it; no sooner had I finished the book than I downloaded the next book in the series. Hoping there's more to come.

I am an avid fan of David Baldacci and one of the reasons is the way he can introduce a new character and lay the story out in an entirely different form to his previous novels. Some novelists, even good ones, are like actors who seem to portray any new character in the same way they did others in previous roles. The really good ones change the portrayal to suit the story. That is David Baldacci. Loved this book and Aloysius Archer and look forward to more.

I have read at least 90% of David Baldacci’s books and found “one good deed” not up the standard I expected and have enjoyed in his other books. The style used I also found to be very different to many of his previous books. However the story was still good and kept me guessing a lot of the way. I totally recommend it to anyone who enjoys “who done it” type books.

Prepare for a new series - Archer an ex con turned detective, set in the 1940s. It is like a mixture of a James Cagney movie and Wallace and Grommet! You can see what he is trying to do with this mixture of Sam Spade and Grapes of Wrath but it does not really work. Two dimension characters and stilted dialogue trying to hard to be “period”.

Great book. Not one of his usual pacy thrillers. This one’s set in America in the early part of the 20th century in a small town. A stranger arrives and one of the local business owners offers him work. Seems innocent enough but the story is about what happens next after one of the owners is murdered. The plot is fairly pacy, but in a relaxed way and the characters are well described. You love or hate them.

For me not one of his best. Very slow to get into and indeed I was past half way in the book before it became interesting. I have read all Baldacci books and the only one I did not like was the Atlee Pine book. However, I must say that any more with the character in One Good Deed will also be given a miss. Where has the Baldacci flare gone.

I did not know what to expect from this book, but was pleasantly surprised. Archer is an interesting new character who helps to solve a mystery in a Reacher-esque sort of a way but set in the late forties / early fifties.

Yes there are some plot devices which test the limits of credibility, but the story moves along at pace, with good characters and strong writing.

I hope there are more outings for Archer.

David Balducci has not once yet failed to write books that set the gold standard for other authors to aspire to. This one, in another different style, had me gripped from the start. The journey through these pages was magical a true page-turner. A solid plot full of action twists and turns and no irritating inconsistencies that often ruin the plot from rival authors. Set post WW2 with a returning US soldier landing smack bang in a web of intrigue. It got me thinking how different life is 80 years on. A difference marked by overpopulation and greed, resulting in a less caring world.
