After almost 20 years Matthew Reilly concludes the Jack West Jnr saga with one last run through the wringer. Oddly for the grand finale, The One Impossible Labyrinth is the most constrained, linear and somewhat rushed book of the seven that is tightly written well edited but seems to lack the scope of the previous novels.
The story bounces from one maze to the next and... That's it. Basically one long conclusion that ties up all the loose ends it's a satisfying enough ending if not somewhat predictable.
The deaths in the book are earnt given the length of the series, however Reilly almost revels in the torture porn at odds with the general humour and light action in the rest of the story.
As someone who really did not like the last book after returning to the series after a long break, TOIL is less aggregious with toned down commentary on the church and modern politics and pop culture references.
On the one hand Reilly explains everything on the other any science behind the final revelation is cursary at best and the story would have benefited from even more time at the end explaining how Earth ( and the moon ) came to be, who the civilisation actually was that actually seeded everything and some of the science behind the magic.
Reilly knows what he likes and writes for people who like it. He can describe his own images as long as you don't overthink the science behind it all.
The author smartly avoids bashing Jesus/Christianity and the Church in this one without his own opinions coming through for a change.
A great series, but I'm glad it's over.

But the road will be hard. For this is a maze like no other – a maze of mazes. Uncompromising and complex. Demanding and deadly. It all comes down to this. For it ends here – now – in the most lethal and dangerous place Jack has encountered in all of his many adventures. And in the face of this indescribable peril, with everything on the line, there is only one thing he can do. Attempt the impossible.

Despite being a fan of the series, disappointed by this book. It’s just meh. Pacing is off, characters seem different, reacting differently than expected, story… too many ‘unbelievable’ moments…Miss the high stakes and ‘wow’ moments of earlier books

Matthew Reilly's epic journey culminates in the most spectacular fashion. With epic battles, truly evil villains, complex challenges, this is a dangerous and deadly race to stop the end of the world. Jack West and his team, utilise their training, historical knowledge, strength and reliance on each other to fight the evil that is destroying the world. Fast-paced, filled with explanatory diagrams and amazingly detailed historical insights from the map on the skull of Imhotep to the new theory on the Trojan horse, this book was an amazing read. Matthew Reilly thank you, I had to read this in one day! Thoroughly recommend this novel.

‘This is all coming together . . .’ he breathed. ‘Here. Now. In this place.’
4.5 stars
A heartstopping finale to an epic series.
The One Impossible Labyrinth is the 7th and final novel in the series featuring our hero, Jack West Junior. The book immediately opens where the previous book left off diving straight into the action. I'd recommend starting from book 1 if you're new to the series.
The Jack West Jnr series is an exhilarating packed adventure series and this latest entry is n exception. Knowing this was the last one, I wanted to savor it but once I started I couldn't put it down devouring page after page as the story raced towards the grand finale.
For Jack and the team the stakes are the highest so far as the fate of the world hangs on their completion of this last Impossible challenge. Each obstacle they have to overcome is more complex, obscure and challenging than the last. Just when you think things couldn't possibly get any more hopeless, thr author pulls.put another gut wrenching twist.
The settings are detailed, intricate and well developed. The pictures help to visualize the locations and puzzles.
The series and this book feels like Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones crossed with a Tom Cruise action movie. While the book focuses heavy on plot and action, the characters are well developed, realistic and each lovable in their own way so its hard to pick a favorite. The alternate and different take on many real historical and mythological events and locations are well done and thought provoking.
Overall, I'd highly recommend this book and series. It's sad to say goodbye to a beloved series after 16 years and 7 books but overall the ending was satisfying and wrapped everything up well.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have yet to experience the perfect book so I can't give this 5-stars but....damn what a rollicking read. MR delivers again. His imagination runs wild as he puts the protagonist into seemingly inescapable situations.
Jack and his friends face some ridiculous trials, unimaginable tests and some not very nice opponents.....will they save the DAY?
I'm not telling but I was exhausted when I closed the book.
UNPUTDOWNABLE.

If you haven’t read the first 6 books in this incredible series, don’t delay. You certainly won’t be sorry. This final book is definitely worthy of the 5 stars I’ve given it. Thank you Matthew Reilly, thank you for Jack West Jr & his amazingly loyal & loving circle of friends & family. I’m going to miss them.

Iv been reading the Jack West junior novels since 6SS released. It's been one hell of a ride, lots of action, lots of character development, new and exciting characters and the loss of some of them. This book finished the series off perfectly with more action, history, puzzles and adventure.

Epic ending to an epic series! Absolutely fantastic and entirely lived up to expectations. Action packed to the gills and fast paced from start to finish. This is what I expected of Matthew Reilly and he most definitely delivered. I’ve read this series over the last 16 years and I’m definitely going to read them all again! Spoil yourself and read all 7 books for the entire exciting story. Just amazing!

I have loved this series and this is such a magnificent final book. High’s, lows and certainly leaving the reader with an inability to put it down. My only disappointment is that it is over. I have re-read all the books and know that in the future I will read them again and again.
Mr Reilly you have done us proud, I can’t wait for your next series of whatever that may be.
So to anyone reading this I hope you enjoy or enjoyed the books as much as me, I really can’t recommend them enough. Thank you

Have you ever read a book and then wished you could forget it so you could read it again and again? Well that is how I have been with the whole Jack West Jnr series. If I could only forget them, then I could enjoy them again and again. I highly recommend this series to everyone. I am not going to mention anything about the story as I don't want to spoil it for people. All I can say is READ THIS SERIES. You won't regret it.

Mr Reilly - it should have just been a trilogy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 April 2022Verified Purchase
I am a fan of Matthew Reilly's books & the first Jack West book was the first novel of his that I read. Enjoyed it so much went on to read all his back catalogue (many more than once) & have bought all his work since. Have stuck with the Jack West series out of loyalty & the hope that I'd win the lottery & be able to make a charity bid to become a minor character (serious fans will know what I on about).
For me the Jack West series started to decline from book 4 and this last one has been a bit slog to get through. The first three were brilliant, so think it should just have been a trilogy. Will still buy Mr Reilly's new books & look forward to ready more stories that kept me captivated more than the last four of this series.

Brilliant final book

In many ways I wish I had come to this series when they had all been written so that I could have done a marathon reading session from 7 to 1 one after another so that they are fresh in my mind. Another good idea has been the drawings to match Matthew's descriptions of buildings etc which has really helped. However, the anticipation of waiting for each book and the story within has been worth it. Matthew Reilly is a brilliant storyteller.
