This is a well researched book brimming with facts about the Swiss people during the 15th Century.
Until I read this book, I didn’t know that the Swiss were so feared during this period & it was not uncommon for them to shatter army’s that had far more numbers than the Swiss had.
Another great historical fiction book by Peter Darman.

Leon Muller, resident of the city of Bern, has it all – a wealthy family, an excellent education and a very bright future. But he throws it all away on a rash impulse and as a result is thrown into a world that is totally alien to him. Cast out of his home city, he is forced to join an army of impoverished, half-starved soldiers that is fighting for the freedom of the Swiss people.
Derided as ‘alpine shepherds’ by their aristocratic enemies, Leon and his comrades are plunged into a life-and-death struggle as the nobles and armies of the Holy Roman Empire and the Austrian Habsburgs circle the Swiss Confederation like ravenous wolves, united in their determination to wipe out the Swiss nation once and for all. It is a war of no quarter and great butchery.
‘Outcast’ is the first volume in the ‘Alpine Warrior’ series – the story of Swiss soldier Leon Muller in the wars of the 15th Century when Europe was torn apart by civil, dynastic and imperial conflicts.

I have read each of Peter Darman's Dura series, he is a writer that I follow and enjoy. How disappointing it was therefore to find so many glaringly simple errors in the narrative and punctuation of this offering. It appears that the author was pressed with a tight schedule to publish and given insufficient time to review his work either personally or via the use of efficient proof readers. Such a shame as the story line itself is first rate, covers a period of European history that I know little of and I am hooked. Looking forward to Leon's further adventures, but please do not publish until read and ready.

I Enjoyed The Read Immensely.

This book had all the elements needed to ensure an interesting and enjoyable reading experience. It's fiction covers a historical period reasonably well known to most historical fiction readers but is located in the emerging Switzerland. The battle scenes were very good and were brought alive by the author with skill. The characters and scenarios were believable as were the politics. Full marks on this one.

I've read all of the partheon books, all excellent reads, but this one I could only get to chapter 6 and I couldn't read any more. This is only the second book in over 200 that were that bad I couldn't finish it.
