From master of horror Dario Argento (Suspiria, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) comes Phenomena one of his most eccentric and unique thrillers, featuring telepathic insects, maggots galore, and even a razor-wielding chimp! Jennifer Corvino (Jennifer Connelly, Labyrinth), daughter of a world-renowned movie star, arrives in the so-called Swiss Transylvania to attend an exclusive girls school. However, a vicious killer is targeting the pupils, and sleepwalker Jennifer finds herself in the assassin s headlights when her nocturnal wanderings cause her to witness the death of a fellow pupil. Aided by paraplegic entomologist John McGregor (Donald Pleasence, Halloween) and her own uncanny ability to communicate telepathically with insects, Jennifer sets out to track down the killer before she herself becomes the latest victim... Released in 1985, towards the end of Argento s decade-long golden age as a director, Phenomena co-stars Dalila Di Lazarro (Andy Warhol s Frankenstein), Patrick Bauchau (Clear and Present Danger) and Daria Nicolodi (Tenebrae), and features lush cinematography by Romano Albani (Inferno) and a pounding prog rock score by Goblin (Deep Red, Suspiria). Presented here in a sumptuous new 4K restoration of the film and with a newly created hybrid English/Italian audio track, this is the definitive release of Argento s creepy classic. This is the limited edition boxset but I imagine Arrow have it available ( or will have ) in an individual release without some of the boxset extra content, the transfer is sourced from a new 4k film scan of the original negatives and the resulting 4k master has been downscaled to 1080p, it looks better than it has ever looked, proper film grain retained, bags of fine detail, black levels and contrast look very good as long as you have calibrated your equipment correctly, I have never seen this film look so good and it just goes to show that shooting on film and scanning the camera negatives at 4k not only future proofs everything ( allowing for a 4k UHD release at some stage ) but these 4k scans result in more fine detail on blu ray too.
I mention UHD because too many titles are being released that are simply upscaled from 2k digital intermediates, sure they have wider colour gamut and HDR but my point is, with some older ( not all for various reasons ) movies which are shot on film they can go back and scan the original negatives and it's real 4k.
Dario Argento, one of the great directors of our time, his familiar techniques we are so accustomed still chill us to the bone.
Jennifer Connelly is a class act, one of her finest films in her teens, she plays a fantastic lead of both damsel in distress and unlikely hero with her communication to the animal world. Top DVD quality and a spine chilling evening in, this is a thoroughly and captivating film for all the horror buffs out there.
