1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.
By Sonnie on 30 July 2021
After receiving the item, I put it on charge for nearly 24 hours as I have errunds to do. Didnt come home till the next day. Surprisingly, it just wouldnt turn on and the charging light is still red??
For A$1800, youd expect quality. Logged on to the website to download the the set up, and it so disorganized. Had to buy A250 worth of docking station for the display port and it wouldnt recognize it when setting up..
It does not turn on..shame..you should have marketed it fully functional regardless of the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost a great headset! Depends on use case and expectations.
By Amazon Customer on 25 November 2021
Once one of the first to pre-order the 8KX when pre-orders opened and also was a 5K+ backer. I was quite happy with the 5K+ experience and the experiences that people seemed to be having at CES and road shows seemed promising enough to make the order. Just as a reference, I have also owned the original oculus rift, and briefly owned and tried an original HTC Vive headset, before getting the 5K+.

Upon receiving, I can confirm I was a little disappointed, as I could not get the clarity I was able to get in the 5K+, and this seemed to come down to the IPD no longer having enough adjustment in it to quite get the sweet spot that I could see when I slightly looked away from centre vision, with each eye. So was pretty frustrating to know that great clarity was so close, yet so far. I later modified this by doing the extreme IPD mod, however, even after that, I’m still unsure if it improved clarity much for me. The fact Pimax never released there IPD calibration tool doesn’t help the situation. However, the improvements in resolution out wayed the slight loss in clarity and overall, there is no way I could ever go back to the 5K+. Also, my IPD issues is not everyone’s experience. I would say if your IPD is 62 and over, then you should be good to go.

Another thing I was not a fan of the 8KX at first was that it was very front heavy. This was before the modular audio strap (MAS) became available for it I might add. Once the MAS arrived, and after some modifying to allow the headstrap to lower to it’s intended position (be prepared to tinker a little when you buy into the Pimax universe lol), comfort was improved. However, I did also add 300gm of metal counterweight to the back of it to help even this out even more, which made it far better. However, you are now dealing with a headset that weighs over 1kg, and this is not great if you have to jump around or move your head a lot in your games. I mainly play sim racing and flight simulators however, so this is not really an issue for me once it is counterbalanced.

Another gripe was sound. The standard MAS speakers are pretty garbage. They work, but I would rather use the speakers on my TV usually. Very tinny and thin sounding. However, I recently finally received the deluxe audio option I pre-order nearly 2yrs ago, and I can confirm they are a huge improvement, and for me, they are good enough for me to now be my daily choice of sound output. However, again, another gripe is that they put out a bit of a high pitch whine when there is no background sound coming out of them. This could be pretty annoying for someone playing a quiet game and not a simulator where there is constant background noise to drown it out. So for me it is not an issue. I’ll also say, many others have complained about this high pitch whine, and others have said they have no whine. A general consensus seems to be that it seems to be the older headsets that have the whine and the newer ones being released these days has had some sort of hardware change in them, which prevents this issue. But just be aware of it, if you are sensitive to such a thing.

I’ve said a bunch of negative things here and it is the reason why I can’t quite give it 4 stars. However, if you can look past these flaws, this is the only headset in the consumer market, at this price point, that is offering this large FOV experience (normal 140 deg is optimal setting), with very decent resolution, which is very close to a G2. If you play sims, like iracing or flight simulator, and you would consider yourself an enthusiast, then I definitely can recommend this headset for these purposes. Even though many complain about the peripheral FOV being a bit blurry, this does not mean it is unusable, as in my experience, it still adds to the immersion of adding the greater sense of human vision. It gives you the ability to see a car next to me without having to take my eyes off the road ahead of me, even if it is not perfect clarity, and this is priceless for self-awareness in sim racing. So is being able to see both front corners of my car (and beyond), which I could not do in standard 100deg FOV headsets. It also runs surprisingly well on the PC (admittedly I’m currently running a 3090, but it also ran fine on my 1080ti before that), with it not being much more taxing than the supersampled 5K+ I had, but with far better clarity and reduced SDE.

So overall, I can recommend this headset for simmers. If you are a casual VR players, that plays beat sabre or other more light hearted games that involve more movement, then there are better, more affordable headsets for this, like the G2. Just be aware that it does have it’s flaws and Pimax are still an evolving company and there communications/support have improved greatly over the last few years, but what they have here is still a pretty solid product in my opinion. Fingers crossed they are able to refine and correct there wrong doings for the 12K headset coming out (supposedly lol) Q4 2022. I’ll be one of the first to jump on board if it can live up to half of what it is promising. Enjoy! 😊

5.0 out of 5 stars Consumer VR Headset mit echten 160° FoV
Reviewed in Germany on 2 June 2021
