Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."
Eve starts questioning everyone while her husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts. The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else."
But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

Mainly I think, due to the fact it was very close to home as it is Morris’s lady who is murdered.
All tied in with an extremely nasty old foe who is still orchestrating things from prison.
Some fantastic personal time is had, with Charles bachelor boys heading off to Vegas, Louise’s bachelorette party happening in Eve’s home, Roarke gives Eve her very first personal car, the DLE and some great interaction and humorous lines are had.
At one point during the party for Louise, I thought Eve was just too work focused. Yes, she is usually like that but Roarke had just stressed the importance of living life and Eve herself admitted they needed to just BE and enjoy.
But overshadowing all of this, we have Morris’ distress and pain on losing the woman he was falling in love with.
The who behind Ammy’s murder was surprising and riveting but the why was so sadly pathetic.
I have owned most of these books in paperback for years but now have them all in eBook format, so I am rereading this series once more in order, updating and replacing missing reviews.
Even knowing what is in the future, it is absolutely no hardship to reread this series and I am really enjoying how all the characters are growing and changing.
