Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us." Dallas's friend Chief Medical Examiner Morris had started a serious relationship with Coltraine, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone, including Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts. The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else." But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

I think that the character of Dallas is portrayed with too few social skills. She could still have the same background but she could be more easy with other people

Amazon doesn't allow for more than give stars. This book, in my opinion, is one of the most touching On Death books in the series.

TOP 100 REVIEWER
Once again we have a could not put down book in this series.
Mainly I think, due to the fact it was very close to home as it is Morris’s lady who is murdered.
All tied in with an extremely nasty old foe who is still orchestrating things from prison.
Some fantastic personal time is had, with Charles bachelor boys heading off to Vegas, Louise’s bachelorette party happening in Eve’s home, Roarke gives Eve her very first personal car, the DLE and some great interaction and humorous lines are had.
At one point during the party for Louise, I thought Eve was just too work focused. Yes, she is usually like that but Roarke had just stressed the importance of living life and Eve herself admitted they needed to just BE and enjoy.
But overshadowing all of this, we have Morris’ distress and pain on losing the woman he was falling in love with.
The who behind Ammy’s murder was surprising and riveting but the why was so sadly pathetic.
I have owned most of these books in paperback for years but now have them all in eBook format, so I am rereading this series once more in order, updating and replacing missing reviews.
Even knowing what is in the future, it is absolutely no hardship to reread this series and I am really enjoying how all the characters are growing and changing.

Great detective story

I really love the way these plots are set out usually the main character is holier than thou but Eve is a genuine person with her anti-social twist her love for Roarke that she finds hard to understand her group of friends that all widened from book 1 until now...I definitely think her obsession for her job is a bit much at times...her love hate relationship with Summerset is a bit hard but all in all I love the books and I would recommend them to all murder mystery enthusiasts..I have read 6 in a row and just starting my 7th...

A cop is killed and Eve is on the case
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 September 2020Verified Purchase
This is personal as the killed cop was going out with a friend and colleague too. There are a lot of twists and turns in this excellent story. In the middle of the investigation Eve is hosting her worst nightmare - a hen party for a close friend - it just adds to the mix.

Promises in Death
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2009Verified Purchase
As usual the author has done a superb job in continuing the story of Lieutenant Eve her side kick Peabody and her husband the understanding Roarke. This is set in the future(New New York)and Eve has now been married to Roarke for two years. I make this the 27th book in the series. It can be read as a standalone book as threads are fed in from previous books. A fellow officer (Amaryllis Coltraine) from another precinct is murder and is also her friends' Chief Pathologist Morris love interest. This is hard for Eve and Peabody as they all respect Morris.

Keeps you guessing

The murder of a fellow officer starts a search for who did it and why. One huge red herring as the story unfolds with the plethora of suspects gradually being whittled down.
