A worthy UHD upgrade if you’re a fan

If you don’t have a nostalgic attachment to this film, this isn’t going to win you over - just watch the first movie and then skip to the 4th movie. Rambo III is a good action movie, but it had a very troubled production and release path and got its timing hopelessly wrong. It’s interesting to rewatch this now from a cinema studies perspective and certainly there’s a lot to admire in how this film was crafted given its budget and the technological limitations of the time. Helicopter combat sequences with real helicopters are not easy to film, just by the by. Studio Canal have done an amazing job of remastering this from the original film negatives. Trust me, you’ll never watch the old Blu-Ray again. A word to the younger generation - this was filmed on film and includes a number of night scenes shot in low light that are very grainy. That’s just a consequence of using photochemical film. This looks better than I recall it looking when I saw it at the cinema but that print had been through a few dozen screenings before I got to it. If you’re a fan or a cinema studies student, I recommend adding this to your collection.

This was the one where Rambo fights the entire Russian army in Afghanistan. It takes a while to get going, so anyone watching this will need a degree of patience to reach the action scenes. The film is fairly action-packed from that point onwards, but it does get very far-fetched at times. This is more of a straight-out war film than the films that preceeded it, though it is still quite enjoyable if you are in the right mood.

This DVD release is also supposed to be almost completely uncut, unlike the previous cinema and VHS video versions. I didn't see the film at the cinema or on video, so I cannot comment on whether this is true or not. The film is still violent, though, but worth seeing if you love the other Rambo films as I do. I give it three stars. In my opinion, it's still better than the awful Rambo film that came after it in 2006, though. Switch your brain off, get the popcorn ready and enjoy.

Blu-ray or just upscaling?

This time, unfortunately, I am a little disappointed with a Blu-ray revision of a Rambo movie!

Although the film is completely uncut, the image quality looks more like an upscaling of the DVD version than real Blu-Ray-HD. The German sound (dts) partially sounds rather subdued or dull and sometimes you can hear the digital sound filter downright hiss in the background.

All in all one can say, who owns the DVD should better keep it!
Too bad, but this time it only lasts for 3 stars.

Dieses Mal bin ich leider etwas enttäuscht von einer Blu-ray-Neufassung eines Rambo-Films!

Obwohl der Film absolut uncut ist, wirkt die Bildqualität eher wie ein Upscaling der DVD-Version. Der deutsche Ton (dts) klingt streckenweise eher verhalten bis dumpf und manchmal hört man regelrecht die digitalen Tonfilter im Hintergrund zischeln.

Alles in allem kann man sagen, wer die DVD besitzt, sollte diese einfach behalten.
Schade, aber dieses Mal reicht es nur für 3 Sterne.

What more do you really want to know about John Rambo! What you looking for here is how is the Blu Ray quality. For its age it looks really good. The detail is there, nature, faces, weapons. Rambo 3 has it all. A must buy blu ray and any Rambo fan shouldn't do without. I am sceptical on some 80's and 90's after seeing a few terrible upgrades to blu ray but Rambo 3 is one of the ones that proves it can be done. Fast Delivery and a great seller. 5 stars from me.
