This is a very suspenseful read, both educational and intriguing. Haven't read any other novels by Preston and Child, but certainly will be looking out for more by them. I have given 4 stars - maybe 3.5 was all it deserved, but that is not an option. The Authors should look to see if they can improve their grammar and spelling - most noticeably 'shined' instead of 'shone'.
The suspense was real and built as the story progressed, to the last page.
A good read which included information regarding genetics to computer wizardry - not all of it correct however, but interestingly entwined into the plot of this story.

Relic, a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child thriller that introduces FBI Special Agent Pendergast
Just days before a massive exhibition opens at the popular New York Museum of Natural History, visitors are being savagely murdered in the museum's dark hallways and secret rooms. Autopsies indicate that the killer cannot be human....
But the museum's directors plan to go ahead with a big bash to celebrate the new exhibition, in spite of the murders.
Museum researcher Margo Green must find out who - or what - is doing the killing. But can she do it in time to stop the massacre?

After a bit of a slow start this book really picks up pace. Set in the New York Museum of Natural History this is a book that is a mystery, thriller, science fiction all thrown into one. Once I got into it I could not put it down, a really interesting story told in a suspenseful setting and it really kept me guessing.

Gripping and atmospheric
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2022Verified Purchase
I picked up this book because it was recommended by Cal Newport. The story starts with brutal murders in the Museum of Natural History just a few days before their new exhibition on superstition is about to open. Rumours are spreading around the museum’s employees that the murders are linked to a curse tied to an ill-fated expedition. Or, perhaps, the murders can be explained by a freak mutation that created a supreme predator, as one of the eminent professors beliefs. A ragtag team of sceptical museum staff and the ominous agent Pendergast begin to investigate. The book definitely falls in the guilty pleasure category. It was gripping and atmospheric from the start. The authors also clearly did a lot of research to make the scientific and historical background at least partially believable. The writing was sometimes a bit clumsy. There is no risk of mistaking this book for high literature. However, I was entertained throughout and looked forward to reading it. I think it’s perfect for people who enjoy science fiction a la Jurassic Park or adventure stories like Indiana Jones.

A gripping ride

There's something lurking in the sub-basement, it's slaughtering people and with the opening of the Museum's newest and high-profile exhibition looming, everyone is looking over their shoulder. What is it, how did it get there and why is it decapitating its victims? The answer lies in a curious mix of science and anthropology. I was guessing right up to the end...and then some! Relic is a gripping 4-star ride.

Great entertainment

Picked this up in a cheap book sale years ago and over the years have read it quite a few times. I have been meaning to give it to a charity shop many times, but every time decided to read it before I did so. I now have the Kindle version as well so I can finally give it away. Easy read, interesting and perfect length for a long flight, a cold evening or a day on the beach. It made me read the rest of the Pendergast series, though this -with Reliquary and Cabinet of Curiosities- is by far the best. Some great characters are introduced in Relic that seem to lose their interesting charms as the series progresses. More and more midlife crises and angst is leaving me less and less captivated as time goes on.

I just couldn't get in to it
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 August 2019Verified Purchase
I really liked the premise of this book and had high hopes going in. However, it turned into a bit of a Hollywood monster movie for the final third which resulted in me losing a little interest.
The writing was good and the science and research sections were interesting a great alternative theory to well-known historical events. But other than this, I just couldn't find myself relating to the characters that well and I sometimes found it a little laborious to continue reading.
If the blurb intrigues you, do go ahead as it will likely be your sort of thing (hence the great reviews.)

Relic introduces Agent Pendergast
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2017Verified Purchase
I read this book because I love the film, Relic. The film is dark and creepy with some good characterisation.
The book is the first in a series of novels that feature Agent Pendergast - an extraordinary man who is an intellect, a philanthropist, and a detective whose speciality is unusual and prolific serial murderers. This mystery thriller is complex and fascinating which has, clearly, been researched thoroughly. The authors take care to explain the arcane and archaic details which underpin the mystery without being patronising. I love novels which educate me as well as take me through a fascinating story. This is one of those. And, it was a joy to find that this is the first in series of novels which feature Agent Pendergast.
