Mike Monroe and Jane Baxter barely survived their terrifying journey to the centre of the Earth. But a burning curiosity still tormented them about the origins of the pale creatures in the stygian darkness of the caves, and why were their dreams also haunted by something huge and monstrous that seemed as old as time itself?
Now, news of a Russian military expedition has forced their hands and also meant they must go back to a place they swore they’d never return. But this time they’re going with a team of highly skilled mercenaries and scientists to help them track the Russians and also help unlock the secrets hidden at the centre of the planet.
But what they find is something that evolution created in an environment vastly different to that of the benign world of the surface. And something that waits eagerly for their return.

On the first book; the portrayal of the charactets was non existent and naming them and giving them genders was as about as pointless as naming individual blades of grass. The chatacters were all the same with the exception of the semi antagonist who was only marginally better. There is obvious moments early on when the author thought it would be great to add in traumatic moments but immediately forgot or ignored the fact that the horrendous things he had happen to some of the characters would have ended their adventure right there and then, but instead had his characters push on with little to zero emotional fallout from what they had just witnessed.
On book 2, - SPOILERS AHEAD - i will admit that overall the book was somewhat better written in general, however any respect or enjoyment i had from reading Return to the Center of the Earth ended when he made to extremely disgusting and unnecessary epilogue involving a female character being hobbled (her arms and legs broken) by monsters in the pitch black depths of underground, force fed raw meat and raped as a breeding mule with no hope of ever being rescue, only a slow cruel tortuous end ahead of her.
Some could argue that its a writers job to shock and elicit an emotional reaction from their readers, but this was sick and unnecessary and i thank the gods i didnt buy these books. I definitely have zero plans to read anymore of his stories now, for more reasons than just the above mentioned scene, but that certainly has become the greatest of the reasons.
I would not recommend either novel for soooo many reasons and urge anyone reading this to look elsewhere
Jane and Mike barely survived, the last time they went to the centre of the earth, but they are going back. With a crack team to support and protect them, but still... Along the way, they encounter all sorts of beasties, most of them hostile, in a world which is clearly nothing like anything they are familiar with.
The author has an incredible imagination, clearly, and I always get pulled into whatever world he goes into. I wonder how many members of a team are going to survive to the end of the book and what gruesome thing happens to them along the way - all part of the process with these kinds of books.
Good, solid book.
4.5 stars from me.
Returning to a place thats’s more lethal than anywhere on Earth, seriously what were Mike and Jane thinking?!
A thrill a minute read and questions from their previous adventure answered and an amazing discovery.
There are many characters to love and hate. Love, honour, self sacrifice and utter ruthlessness abound with the characters.
Don’t assume anything is safe or dangerous. Anything can and will happen in this world which is straight from hell.
This also sets the screen for a third book to finish the trilogy.
I so can’t wait for it. It’s going to be AWESOME!!!!!!

My only gripe which I have with every book the author has written is that they are never long enough but for that reason they incredibly hard to put down once you start, highly recommend this book and all the others that he has written

Honesty it left me with a bad taste in my mouth which is a shame as I had enjoyed the book until then.
