There is no messing around. The pilot starts with a fatal shooting, most of the following episodes flashbacks showing how this came to be. Portrayed here is a world full of luxurious locations, people exuding power, extravagant parties (that often do not turn out as expected). Demurely in their midst is new neighbour Emily, ever plotting how best to undermine. Aiding and abetting her is willowy camp Nolan, his skills with computers and bugging devices useful indeed.
Inspired by "The Count of Monte Cristo" (which alert viewers will spot on a bookshelf), this is enormously satisfying fun with highly influential characters rendered increasingly ill at ease before their comeuppance. (Enough must survive, though, to ensure a second season.)
Acting varies, but Emily VanCamp and Gabriel Mann are great as Emily and Nolan. Particularly revealing are the flashbacks showing David as the devoted father so adored by his little daughter. It is easy to appreciate the craving for revenge on all who caused that idyllic childhood to end in tragedy.
Bonuses mainly comprise deleted scenes, but Disc 6 contains interesting features. Surprisingly blue/green screens are used far more extensively than expected - many of the outdoor shots in fact filmed in a studio.
Glossy escapism, full of twists and turns with frequent quick thinking to avert detection and catastrophe. Final cliffhangers tantalise. For many, the next season cannot come too soon.
Recommended.

In fact I bought this first series and others as my daughter had the whole set, which we watched together a couple of years ago, but now she lives 4hours away, I decided to buy my own!
Highly recommend

Watched the first two episodes and so far we like what we've seen and it's become a firm favourite.
My husband also enjoys it (but then he's an Alexander Dumas fan - and so knows the premise).
We watch in bed pre-sleeping and the lovely scenery gives us something to dream about.
The story is interesting and the cast do their jobs as well as should be expected and better than most.
We'll definitely be purchasing Season 2.
