Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing is a warm-hearted and deeply felt neighborhood fable which culminates in a violent conflict and its aftermath. Spike Lee's film has been accused of suggesting that violence is an acceptable solution to social exploitation, but really it is more a cautionary tale that the social prejudices within all of us (yes, even those of us who consider ourselves broad-minded) can at any time flare into an all-consuming flame.
On this Criterion double blu-ray set, a spectacular looking restoration supervised by the DoP emphasizes that almost fairy-tale look in terms of color saturation. The 5.1 track is not a surround showcase but provides a lush and powerful presentation of the film's audioscape including the wonderful Bill Lee score. Have yet to check out the extras and the hefty accompanying book, but this is already a winner.

If you have any interest in Spike Lee's seminal film then get this newly restored 30th anniversary edition. Needless to say DRT is one the most important American films ever made, as fresh and relevant today as it was in 1989. It is flawless film making without a single wasted shot or line of dialogue. The additions are a mix of old and new. The 'old' includes the commentary on the film by Spike Lee, cinematographer Ernest Dickerson and others that featured on the previous 25th anniversary edition. Whereas some of these commentaries for other films are, at best, a 'so what', this is illuminating and revealing in many aspects. Included in the booklet is the edited version of Lee's pre-production notebooks that featured in the 1989 tie-in book that has been out of print for many years. Revelations include his original ideas for casting - Bill Numm as Mr Sr Love Daddy and Sam Jacson as one of the 'Corner Men' for example plus his battles over retaining the ending. The new include a wonderful hour-long documentary made during the film's production that has interviews with cast and locals; a pre-production meeting of the cast doing script run-throughs and a brilliant monologue by Lee recorded in 2000. These extras alone are worth the purchase price.

Beautiful copy of an important movie

I remember seeing this when it came out, I loved the style of narrative and treatment of colour, and was impressed by the message. I've been trying to find a good copy on Blu-Ray and this is it. The luscious sunlight is there, you can feel the heat. Great to see all the wonderful performances again. The story still packs a punch, not that much has changed.
