For those of us with long memories going back to the 1950s and 60s, Tim Roth’s portrayal of John Christie is an extremely accurate tribute to character actor Eric Barker. You could almost swear that you were watching Eric Barker in the role.
Never less than grimly interesting, this depressing and tragic episode in the annals of British criminal justice is a worthy complementary piece to the 1971 film. Could it happen again? Of course it could. Could post-Brexit Britain become as seedy and corrupt as Britain was in the 1950s? I sincerely hope not.
From the then Lord Chief Justice and Home Secretary at the top, to the police and finally to the likes of John Christie at the bottom, there was a streak of rottenness, of putrefaction, of decay similar to what lay under the floorboards at number 10, Rillington Place. This short BBC series from 2016 is a warning from history for a new generation, and a reminder to the old as to how things were, and could be again.

Product description
Tim Roth stars as serial killer John Christie in this three-part BBC crime drama. The series follows Christie and his estranged wife Ethel (Samantha Morton) as they reacquaint themselves after he is released from prison and move into their new home together at 10 Rillington Place in London. There, the couple befriend their new neighbours, newly-weds Tim and Beryl Evans (Nico Mirallegro and Jodie Comer). When Tim's wife and baby daughter die, he is tried for their murders and sentenced to hang. The trial, in which John Christie is a key prosecution witness, places further strain on his marriage and sets a series of events in motion that ultimately reveal Christie's real role in the killings. The episodes are: 'Ethel', 'Tim' and 'Reg'.

A Gift For A Friend
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2020Verified Purchase
I bought this DVD as a gift for a friend recently. She is a big fan of Jodie Comer, who stars in the series and she also likes the young actor who plays her husband. Apparently, she has liked them since they were both in Skins. She is also a fan of the 1971 film of the same name.
I haven't seen this series myself, but I have seen the 1971 film, so I am unable to comment. My friend watched it recently, though and she said that she really enjoyed it. I asked her whether she preferred this series or the older film, but she told me that she doesn't have a preference. She likes this kind of show, so I knew that she would also love this. She has asked me to give this DVD four stars, which I have done. So, it's four stars from my friend for this "excellent" series. She said that she thoroughly enjoyed it and it is well worth buying.

BBC drama at its very, very best.

Saw this originally on the BBC when it was first transmitted. Tim Roth is superb, quite a transformation. I've read the life and crimes on John Reginald Christie before and it amazed me how long it took before he was finally convicted of his terrible crimes. What an absolute slug Christie was and how utterly brilliant Roth is playing Christie, shows the brilliance of the writing and the acting. Although beware that this drama is only imagines the relationship between the Christie, his wife Ethel, the innocent Timothy Evans and his wife Beryl.
Cast Tim Roth as Christie
Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead) as Ethel Christie is superb
Jodie Comer (Killing Eve fame) as Beryl Evans is excellent
Nico Mirallegro as Timothy Evans is both heartbreaking and brilliant.
Highly recommended.

Creepy as hell!

Richard Attenborough's John Christie is a really tough act to follow, but Tim Roth played the part admirably in this fine short series based on events leading to Christie's arrest and subsequent execution. Very authentic and grim sets and some superb performances, particularly from Samantha Morton as Christie's long-suffering wife and Nico Mirallegro as Tim Evans, the poor young man wrongly convicted of the murder of his wife and then was hanged. The first episode is somewhat slow, and Roth does draw out the characterisation somewhat, but all in all this is a gripping series, albeit not easy viewing because of the nature of the material.
