Rosie is sent by her boss the check on why one of her company's hotels in Cornwall is doing so badly, losing money and receiving poor reviews. She takes her son, Danny, for a stay undercover on the lead up to Christmas but ends up helping at the hotel whilst keeping her secret.
I'm always a sucker for books set in Cornwall, so was really looking forward to reading this. It certainly hit the mark for me, I can relate to Rosie and her way of working, a softly softly approach, rather than the confrontational approach of her boss Susan. I loved the description of the area, the feeling of community that living in a small village can bring. With a few twists and turns along the way to add to the romantic side of the book I ended up finishing this book at 5am I just couldn't put it down. An ideal book to curl up with on a Winter's evening it definitely scored 5* for me.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book and I subsequently purchased it on its release.

Good Characters especially Rosie

I warmed to the main character right from the start. The book is, (unusually for this genre) written in the first person, so it was easy to get into her head.
Rosie has been " forced" by her b####-from-hell boss to perform a sort of hotel inspection on The Old Bell Inn in the Cornwall area over the Christmas holidays.
Having driven herself and her ten-year-old son all the way from London, she finds that the inn has double-booked her and they have no more rooms. To her credit, she finds a way to fulfil her work brief and obtain somewhere to stay in the hotel. In the meantime she meets the "failing" manager, Mitchell Fitzpatrick, and tries to save his job. Obviously there is a love interest, but there's more to this story as it explores Rosie's relationship with her son Danny and her difficulties in providing for them as a single parent and her yearning in the past for Mark, (Danny's father), who has been largely absent but who appears to want to make a new start with her. She a!so becomes integrated into village life and sees Danny grow in confidence as they take him into their hearts. This is one of the best romantic novels I have read since my reading habits totally changed during this covid business. There are a few unexpected Americanisms, (e.g. "diaper"); the author is Canadian but Rosie isn't!! Sometimes you might want Rosie to "get a grip" on her emotions, but she seems all the more real for it. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a romantic Christmas read, (with even a tiny bit of snow), warm pubs, and a bit of a detective story to boot.

A sweet Christmas romance. When Rosie, along with her young son Danny, are forced by her bitchy boss to go to Cornwall at Christmas. She is told to find evidence to sack the manager Mitchell due to irregularities in the accounts and bad reviews.
She then find that her room is double booked and no vacancies.
The grumpy Mitchell, who obviously has a soft side, gives up his suite for her and her son Danny.
The dishy Mitchell gradually warms to her but how does she sack him now?
A few twists to this romance but well worth the read.
Strange how Mitchell sounds very similar to a very dishy Irish actor.

When Rosie is sent to Cornwall with her young son Danny at Christmas, by her employer, a large chain of hotels, she doesn't know what to expect. She is instructed to find out what is happening there as the Inn has been receiving loads of bad reviews and the accounts don't add up but she has to do it undercover. First impressions are not good, the manager is rude to her and even worse the room she had booked has been given to someone else. Will Rosie be able to find out what is going wrong and put it right? If not, not only will the manager lose his job but Rosie will lose hers as well. A nice cosy read for all romantics. Just right for Christmas.

I am fine with a book being filled with Americanisms if it is set in America . This is set in Devon with an English heroine, so sorry but the ,' candy ' and the 'pot roasts' etc are all very jarring. The book is also very repetitive,far too many descriptions of how much she loves her son and what she is feeling . These are often very close to each other , like the books not been proofed properly. No real feel of Devon ,so not sure why it was set there. A shame as the set up was promising.

It really makes me angry when books like this get 5 star ratings, which they don't deserve, are an insult to all the brilliant authors out there and makes a total mockery of the rating system. The story line concept does have legs - but that was where it stopped. Repetitive, boring, totally predictable and very naive writing. Don't waste your money
