Surprisingly good fun, but for one night only

Often films fail to deliver on the promise held out for them, so it made a nice change to watch a film which, while not a classic over delivered on my expectations.
As loosely based on real events as something so loose it has dropped off, this film tells the story (?) of a foray by the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret in to a raucous, alcohol drenched London on Victory in Europe day 1945. It seems that this is something that did actually happen but the producers have grown this germ of an idea in to a slapstick knockabout tale that is so unbelievable it somehow just works.
Sarah Gadon is excellent as the young Elizabeth to who she bears a striking resemblance. While her sister and other characters play it for laughs, she maintains an innocent dignity which gives the film a poignant charm.
Though the British royal family may have riches beyond most of our imaginings, this film reminds us that they live in a guilded cage where a carefree youth is crushed by the demands of service.

I never understand why this question comes up when one is simply buying a DVD!

If I have ever seen a worse film, then I struggle to remember which one would surpass this one This was embarrassingly unfunny. I appreciate that it was based, loosely on true events, but it really is, in my opinion , this was garbage, A drunken [Princess Margaret being transported in a wheelbarrow]???was just one instance.
It really is very ,very bad. Perhaps someone who buys it from the charity sale [which is where it is going] may disagree - in which case ,good luck to them !

Fun and light

As others reviewers point out this is very, very loosely based on the fact that Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were allowed out to join the celebrations on VE day incognito. In this film Margaret is separated from the escorts and is swept along to various clubs and parties n London, while Elizabeth, assisted initially unwillingly by a surly airman Jack, tries to track her down. Whilst Margaret is played largely for laughs, Elizabeth's is a slightly more serious role and her interaction with Jack is effectively developed. It is a fun film and a very light watch.

Madcap, Funny and Moving. Highly Recommended.

Oh I wish the events depicted in this movie were true. It makes you see the queen in a different light. Madcap in places, funny and also moving. When Princess Elizabeth is caught up in the crowd outside Buckingham Palace with her parents on the balcony, one person asks why she isn't cheering. "They got us through this war" she says. This makes Elizabeth realise just how much The Royal Family means to ordinary people and the nation has a whole. A brilliant film which I will enjoy again and again.

Although this is based on true events I'm not sure how close to the truth this is, if at all, but its a bit of fun none the less.
