In the first series, we are introduced to the domestic conflicts of the Liverpudlian Royle clan, with Aherne as Denise, daughter of Jim (Ricky Tomlinson) and Barbara (Sue Johnston), and soon-to-be-wed-to boyfriend, Dave (Cash). In the second series, Denise has now married Dave, but the Royle family sofa is no less crowded for that. The third series sees the addition of Denise and Dave's first child which brings its share of new trials and tribulations to the semi-inert world of now-grandparents, Jim and Barbara. The 1999 and 2000 Christmas specials are also included as well as the five one-off episodes: 'The Queen of Sheba', 'The New Sofa', 'The Golden Egg Cup'. ...The Royle Family Complete Collection - 7-DVD Boxset

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete and great quality. Don’t listen to other reviews

Ignore other reviewers who state that 2 Christmas specials are missing! They’ve been sent the incorrect version by either a marketplace seller or Amazon. Negative reviews are referring to the 7 disc 2010 blue edition, which was complete at the time. Since it’s release, a further 2 specials have been aired. Now, THIS edition, which is 9 discs and has a red sleeve, DOES INDEED FEATURE EVERY EPISODE AND SPECIAL, including Joe’s Crackers and the very last episode, Barbara’s Old Ring. sorry others have been sent the 2010 edition when ordering this, but these are incorrect reviews on the set listed here. They should’ve contacted Amazon for a replacement.

The quality is great. The bulk of these episodes were made 20 years ago, and there is nothing wrong with the picture, but don’t expect HD as that wasn’t a thing in the late 90’s.

Now a note on the series itself. I watched the very first episode when it aired for the first time back in 1998 and fell in love. The characters have a strange way of inviting you in. You feel as though you are sat with them. Many nights over the Christmas season, I have watched the Xmas special from series 2, where the family are sat heavy on the sofa - exchanging small talk. I felt as though i was there with them, post-Christmas dinner. We can all relate to these guys, specially if you’re a northerner like me. We all have a Nana, a Barbara, an Anthony (which was me in my family) and of course a Jim - sat proud in his arm chair ripping into people on the box. Much more than a comedy - The Royle Family documents northern life. It serves as a time capsule to how we once lived. Those days are fading fast in the advent of social media, mobile phones and online streaming like YouTube.
