5.0 out of 5 starsCompelling, a little naughty and a great story
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021
Totally spoiler free but OMG what an ending. I kind of hate myself for reading it the day it came out as now I have to wait until November! 😬😭

KF Brenne books are always hilarious and I really enjoy her unique characters. This book was no different, although it did have some surprising sexual situations! Finley was a strong character who didn't take rubbish from anyone, and Nyfain-the-sometimes-jerk was compelling. I loved Finleys' connection with her family and how they drove her to try and help the Kingdom.

If you haven't tried K F Breene you are missing out.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat story but left me conflicted
Reviewed in Australia on 24 October 2021
I really liked the storyline in this take on Beauty and the Beast, but I am conflicted. I am all for the broody hero, though we find he is more layered as the story continues. Our heroine is tough without being invulnerable and I am curious to learn more about her repressed animal, though I have my suspicions.
I'm not generally a prude but the graphic, in-your-face language and scenarios, particularly the Hadriel character, seemed overly aggressive and killed the romance element for me at times. The regular use of the c bomb is a huge turn off for me and the sudden urge the characters seemed to have to talk dirty in the middle of other issues was a bit jolting.
With that said, if you can look past the list interludes, there was action, adventure and world building that make me want to search up the second installment to see what happens next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected

It was not definitely what I expected reading before hand the synopsis of the book. I kind of expected some kind of copy paste of ACOTAR but only the premise was alike.

The characters need more development as I felt them too superficial and simple focused only in one main thing which tends to be the main plot of the book too, sexual attraction, making it look to me more like an erotica book instead of phantasm as I was expecting.

It has in my opinion far too many sexual scenes and not plot development at all. Also language is quite simple and easy reading plagued with many cursing words, which I dont mind but found quite excessive.

Either way I think I will give a chance to second book to see if the author focus more on the story of the curse and develope more her characters.

So many things about this book had me gripped to the story. The love/hate between the 2 main characters. The side character add the perfect amount of comedy. I finished this in about 2 days (I have little ones) but when i was finished a dove right into book 2. Some things were predictable but other things i'm still trying to figure out which I love.

I enjoy the strength of K.f. Breene’s characters. Not only the main one but everyone in the story. They all make you see them as a necessary part of the plot.

As a fan of the author, I was very surprised at the level of poor writing. The first chapters were FULL of unnecessary commas…and worst yet, my biggest pet peeve, the author used so many “though”s in her sentences. For example, “I really hate unnecessary commas, though” (UGH!!) The sentences were hard to follow because they were all written strange and almost disjointed.

I was highlighting each error as I went and couldn’t take it anymore after a few chapters. I tried to pay attention to the story, and even then, I was not enjoying the characters. The main female lead was overly abrasive - but not in a cute and relatable way. At some point she was mad at a shaking tree and kept calling it names and made some strange joke about cutting down it’s cousin…and then how she wanted to dance naked around it’s tree corpse. I just….what? Why?

This is an overly long review from someone who didn’t finish the book. But I even skipped to the main lead meeting the love interest - and it was just so lame. All I have to say.

A Ruin of Roses is the first part of a sexy retelling of the Beauty and the Beast tale. It is described as dark but I personally didn't find it so. On the contrary. Yes, the heroine is foul mouthed and the sex is not on the sweet side, which might be why it is described as dark. Or the attribute is simply to warn off potential readers who expect a clean, fluffy Disney style romance. This book is definitely not for them.

But it is HILARIOUS and super fun to read. KFBreene is taking us on a wild ride through a demon cursed kingdom that fights for survival against a deadly sickness on the one side and magical imprisonment including demonic (read: sexual) tortures on the other side of the realm. What makes this book and all of the author's other work so special and uniquely hers is the specific kind of humour that heats the pages. It shines through the situations, the conversations, actions and the thought processes of the characters. Once again we are treated to the most peculiar, eccentric supportive characters whose personalities crack me up every time. Usually it's a whole crew of side characters that run the show but in this book the trophy goes to one person alone: Hadriel takes the icing on the cake. No words can describe him. Well, KF Breene obviously can. Point in case. Suffice to say: you're in for a treat here!!!

As for the romance aspect, the interactions between the protagonists are not sweet or shy or ... "romantic". Instead they are rough and raw, honest and direct. And helluva hot. I am a sucker for another device Breene uses often to deepen the main couple's connection: the merging and mating of their specific powers/gifts/magic. This makes me all mushy on the inside. Combined with the snarky humour I find myself alternating between happy sighs and genuine laughter throughout the story, leaving me with a satisfied smile at the end-for-now. What more can you ask in a book?

5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty and the beast where beauty kicks ass

Beauty and the beast retelling except beauty kicks some major ass. This book (like all her others), is enthralling. It’s sucks you into a different world completely. I literally couldn’t put this down. The MC is strong but compassionate. She’s everything you want in a main character, she has snark, a heart, strong willed, super smart and I kind of want to be her when I grow up. Side characters are quirky and I fell instantly in love with them! World building was great without being overwhelming and easy to follow. The plot is intriguing and the love interest…🥵. Of course it includes humor that the author is known for! I can’t wait for book two already!

I enjoyed the Demigods of SF, DDVN, Midlife, etc.. So, now I moved on to the newest collection and I am not hooked. Yes the ending makes you want to continue on, but the middle did little to captivate me. I enjoyed life at her home village before and after. The siblings are interesting and make you want more of them especially in the final chapters. I have no qualms about sexual prowess but the castle life didn’t help me build on the main characters personalities, at this time it felt more like a backdrop. I am not sure how to explain it well. I did get bits of information from that time and although there are tidbits of the original beauty and the beast fairytale and follows much of the impactful moment of its storyline, there are add-ons and twists. When book 2 comes out, I will reread this book and update my review if I have different thoughts then.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid start to a new series inspired by Beauty and the Beast

I enjoyed this book but thought it would knock me for six a little more. I think after all of the build up and warnings about explicit content (I'm a massive fan of this author - I've read most of her books and they're all 5 stars from me), I was expecting a little more of a punch but what I found seemed to be more gratuitous smexy scenes thrown in here and there to spice things up a little and make it seem like a more risque, erotic read. I didn't find anything shocking or treading over any sort of line at all. This isn't a comment on the author's work as I'm sure some readers will be clutching their pearls, but more on what I expected. I'm obviously reading a lot of content that jumps straight over that invisible line of what makes a darker, naughtier read because it just seemed like a couple of kinkier bits and pieces were scattered about briefly and that was as heavy as it got. There was plenty of steam that didn't push the envelope that far between the two main characters (which I was kind of expecting because my favourite books by this author have them sealing the deal in the second/latter books, rather than the first), but again, nothing I found out of place or ground-shaking. A word of warning for those that might find the random kink scenes offensive - read the flipping warning on the book rather than buying it and complaining. It's labelled as erotic fantasy so that might give you a bit of a clue. There are also a few 'c' bombs here and there, too, so if that's something that will make you tsk, tsk, you've been warned so park your disapproval elsewhere. Oh, and there's an itty, bitty cliffhanger but the next book isn't far away, so fear not.

The story is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. As you'd expect from a K. F. Breene book, there was heaps to love, including the spin she's put on a familiar tale. There's a rose garden, an enchanted woods, a scarred hero, a kind but punchy heroine who likes to read and a curse thrown over the kingdom by a demon king that is leading the inhabitants further towards unhappiness and death. The two main characters are both right up my alley. Lyfain, our beast and a dragon shifter, is growly, jealous, possessive and dominant with baggage for days. I really loved the author's shaping of his beast character to fit the narrative. Finley, his counterpart, is intelligent, 6 foot tall, a hunter with a lot of stereotypically 'male' characteristics, poor, a bit of an outcast, sarcastic at all the right moments, tough, beautiful and compassionate and uses her skills and smarts to try and find a cure for the sickness that plagues everyone in her village due to the curse (if you've read this author's work before, she'll remind you of most of her female characters but written in a way that makes her new in the different setting). As she has knowledge of plants and healing, this is woven threw the book which I really enjoyed. She's a shifter, too, but due to the curse, has never made the change and her understanding of this has a lot of gaps which I'm going to assume get filled in in future books in the series.

The secondary characters were good, from Finley's family to those in the castle. My particular favourite was Hadriel, the mediocre servant. Demons abound due to the demon king's curse and his desire to take over Lyfain's kingdom. There are violent, gross demons and smexy-time ones who are there to debauch the castle inhabitants and make them hate themselves and life in general. I'm assuming (and hoping) this is built on more in the next book as while they complemented the story arc, the sexual ones didn't really offer this book that much apart from, once again, opportunities for some readers to pearl clutch. That being said, the book certainly had a flavour of originality for me and I look forward to more world building in the next ones.

The story had a great start and finish, but I found some of the story line in the middle was Finley being hit by waves of arousal and trying to convince herself that she didn't have the hots for Lyfain. The curse was there, her work with the everlass plants was present, but there wasn't that much else standing out for me. That's not to say it wasn't entertaining - it was, otherwise I wouldn't have given it four stars, but there were some bits and pieces in this book that I wasn't expecting from this author. Again, not bad, just not always for me. There was the secret about Lyfain that most readers will figure out from the get-go (I don't think this was meant to be a deep, dark puzzle. At least, I hope not, because it was glaringly obvious), several 'c' bombs here and there (this didn't worry me as they didn't abound and where I'm from, this word is basically an adjective and/or a noun on a daily basis), solid dirty talk and a bit of repetition, particularly regarding how big and muscular Lyfain was and how Finley was 'only' a commoner.

The other thing that wasn't up my alley were some of the phrases used in the intimate scenes, not because they went too far but because I found that they sounded like they came from a cheesy paperback. I'm talking overly explicit lines that seemed literal rather than explicit and gems like wet depths, sudden wetness (so much random liquid that Finley was like a walking Niagara Falls. I ended up feeling sorry for her because she was constantly aroused and it went nowhere for her), a needy *insert 'c' bomb*, more wet kitty cat (use your imagination here) and more gushing between body parts. I'm sure you're getting the picture. It got to the point that I was more concerned about hygiene because there was no running water to help with all this body fluid lol. And the one thing that made my eyes cross was...*SPOILER*.... the hero leaving Finley in the lurch without so much as a goodbye because... wait for it... it was for her own good. This is pet peeve of mine. I hate it in books, it's been done to death and it's cliché. This is a personal preference so don't get your knickers in a knot, but I'm mentioning it because I gave the book 4 stars. I'm sure this will all blow over in the next book, but it made me stabby in this one.

Overall, while there were some elements that meant isn't wasn't quite a 5 star read for me, the book was still really enjoyable and I'll definitely be going on with the next installment. It had this author's customary humour that I enjoy, good suspense with a touch of eerie mystery due to the fantastical nature of the story and great potential for future world building. I'm not a betting woman, but if I was, I'd back the next book being even better.

I may be biased because Beauty & the Beast (original & new retellings) have been my favorite fantasy storyline since childhood! 😍

So...I've gone through many retellings lol

This 1 brought the fun of crude humor; which enhanced an already loved story, for me! I have not finished this book yet (I'm halfway done); but I wanted to review it now, before life happenings makes me forget to lol

The backstory of a world is what truly sets a retelling apart. This is no cookie-cutter Belle or Beast. Belle's fiery wit & intellect is heightened. Warning.... she has common sense!!! Such a welcomed change from authors wanting to have moronic heroines!!! The Beast feels lovable from the beginning, in that Alpha-hole way we know & love ❤. Side characters feel real & have a depth that's not typical of this story! We get an antagonist that is not a "Gaston"; instead, it's a whole species & their leader!

The pace feels OK. There are some moments that would have done well with further exploration. Idk if those points will be revisited later on; so I'm holding judgment to see if more is discussed. Same thing with the backstories of all the main characters. I can assume more info will unfold & current questions I have will be answered. I shall see as I continue!

If you enjoy fairytale retellings, you absolutely must read this book! I noticed other retellings the author did & will definitely be checking those out after this!
